Background
A. Craig Asher is a seasoned venture investor and technology executive with deep roots in both enterprise software and life sciences. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Stanford University and holds an MBA and a Master's in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University, where he also serves on the advisory board for the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences. His early career included consulting at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in the supply chain strategy practice, where he helped drive the turnaround of a distressed packaging manufacturer.
Asher went on to play pivotal roles in three successful software startups. At Commerce One, he contributed during its rapid growth phase. At Trigo Technologies, he served as Director of Product Management and acted as a broad company strategist across marketing, sales, product development, and professional services. Under his leadership, Trigo grew from under $1 million to nearly $40 million in annual revenue and achieved profitability before being acquired by IBM for over $140 million in 2004. He subsequently helped launch IBM's internal startup for the InfoSphere Traceability Server product.
Transitioning into venture investing, Asher co-founded Vital Venture Capital in 2007, focusing on early-stage technology and life sciences companies. He later founded Trancos Ventures to pursue his passion for biotech investing. In 2020, he co-founded OMX Ventures, a committed-capital fund dedicated to early-stage biotech at the intersection of data, engineering, and biology. Trancos Ventures is no longer making new investments, with all new deal flow directed through OMX Ventures. Across his investing career, Asher has built a portfolio of 27+ early-stage companies spanning therapeutics, bio tools, synthetic biology, and diagnostics.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Asher's investment thesis centers on the convergence of data, engineering, and biology. Through OMX Ventures, he targets early-stage biotech companies that leverage computational and data-driven approaches to advance biological innovation. His focus areas include:
His pre-OMX track record from 2009-2020 -- investing in QuantaLife, 10X Genomics, Twist Bioscience, Ginkgo Bioworks, and CD Diagnostics -- returned 4x net to his investor syndicate, validating his thesis around high-quality biological data generation and application.
