Background

A. Eugene Washington is one of the most accomplished healthcare leaders in the United States, with a career spanning senior executive roles at three of the nation's most prominent academic health systems. A graduate of Howard University (B.S., 1972), he earned his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, completed graduate studies in public health at UC Berkeley (M.P.H.) and Harvard University (M.Sc.), and finished his residency training at Stanford University. He began his career as an epidemiologist and clinical investigator at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta before transitioning into academic medicine and executive leadership.

At UCSF, Dr. Washington rose to the role of Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, where he co-founded and directed the Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations -- one of the first centers of excellence dedicated to health services research for minority populations. He also co-founded the UCSF-Stanford Evidence-based Practice Center. He then served as Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences, Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and CEO of the UCLA Health System from 2010 to 2015. In 2015, he was appointed Chancellor for Health Affairs and President/CEO of the Duke University Health System, a position he held until stepping down in 2023. He currently holds the title of Chancellor Emeritus at Duke and continues as a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Washington is an internationally recognized clinical investigator and health policy scholar whose research has had a major impact on prenatal genetic testing, cervical cancer screening and prevention, management of noncancerous uterine conditions, and reproduction-related infections. A unifying theme of his work is improving healthcare quality and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) in 1997 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014. Howard University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2023. His current research focuses on the intersection of climate action and human health, including studies connecting value-based care models with environmental sustainability in healthcare delivery.
