A.J. (Sandy) Marshall

Sandy Marshall is a veteran of the Canadian chemical and polymers industry with over 30 years of experience. He was raised on a farm in Ontario, graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and began his career in 1984 at Polysar Inc., a prominent Canadian rubber manufacturer. Over the following three decades, he progressed through roles spanning research, process and product development, market development, operations, and general management within the chemical sector.

Marshall served as Executive Director of Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC), a nationally focused not-for-profit business accelerator founded in 2008 and based in Sarnia, Ontario. Under his leadership, BIC provided strategic investment, advisory services, and acceleration support to developers of clean, green, and sustainable technologies. He was instrumental in building the Sarnia-Lambton hybrid chemistry cluster and expanding BIC's reach across Ontario, including through the Ontario Bioindustrial Innovation Network (OBIN) and the establishment of the Centre for Commercialization of Sustainable Chemistry Innovation (COMM SCI).

Beyond BIC, Marshall held several prominent board and leadership positions, including President and CEO of the Sustainable Chemistry Alliance, Chairman of the Board of Governors at Lambton College, Chairman of the External Advisory Board for the Biorefinery Research Institute at Lakehead University, and board member of BIOTECanada and Soy 20/20. In 2022, he transitioned from the Executive Director role into a senior advisory and project capacity, with Meaghan Seagrave succeeding him as Executive Director.

Marshall and BIC focus on early-stage companies developing clean, green, and sustainable technologies that convert renewable resources into commercially viable bioenergy, biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. The investment thesis centers on supporting the transition from petrochemical-based manufacturing to bio-based alternatives, positioning Canada as a global leader in the industrial bioeconomy. BIC provides not just capital but also strategic guidance, industry connections, and access to the Sarnia-Lambton bioindustrial ecosystem -- one of the most concentrated refining and chemical clusters in Canada. Investments typically target seed-stage companies with breakthrough technologies in sustainable chemistry, agricultural residue conversion, and advanced materials.
