Background
Aaron Holiday is a software engineer turned venture capitalist who co-founded 645 Ventures in 2014 alongside Nnamdi Okike. He began his career at Goldman Sachs, where he built high-frequency trading algorithms for the equities desk, and later developed one of the first digital trading platforms for foreign exchange options at GFI Group. Before launching 645 Ventures, he gained venture investment experience working directly with the Managing Directors at Gotham Ventures. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science with honors from Morehouse College and an MBA from Cornell University's Johnson School of Management.
Beyond investing, Holiday played a foundational role in the New York tech ecosystem as the first Managing Entrepreneurial Officer at Cornell Tech. Working alongside Greg Pass (former CTO of Twitter), he helped create and pioneer the campus Studio culture and pedagogy. He now serves on the governing board of Cornell Tech. In 2021, he was named to the Forbes Midas Brink List of VC investor up-and-comers to watch for his involvement in startups that have scaled to hundreds of millions in revenue and unicorn status.
Under Holiday's leadership, 645 Ventures has grown from an early-stage fund into a firm managing over $550 million in assets across multiple funds. The firm closed its most recent vehicles -- a $194M Fund IV and a $153M Select Fund I totaling $347M -- in December 2022, with over 90% of capital from traditional institutional LPs including endowments, fund-of-funds, foundations, and consultants. The firm is known for its data-driven, software-powered approach to sourcing and evaluating deals, reflecting Holiday's engineering background.
Investment Thesis & Focus
645 Ventures invests in enterprise SaaS, infrastructure software/developer tools, and consumer technologies, organized around four core themes:
Emerging areas of focus include:
- Citizen Professionals: Software that empowers knowledge workers to replicate skills traditionally requiring advanced professional training, reducing complexity and democratizing expertise.
- SaaS for the Second Wave: Cloud-based software adoption driven by the shift to distributed work and technology penetration into previously underserved business verticals.
- The Engineering Value Chain Revolution: Open source ecosystems and self-serve, API-driven software applications revolutionizing how engineers and data scientists write, test, deploy, and monitor software and data processes.
- Personalized Consumer Applications: Consumer-facing technologies delivering tailored, data-driven experiences.
- Defense Technology: Holiday sees significant opportunity as large defense contractors struggle to innovate fast enough and the government increasingly looks to startups to fill capability gaps.
- Enterprise AI / "Ready for Primetime" AI: Enterprise-grade generative AI applications moving beyond experimentation, including AI-powered call center solutions showing measurable gains in efficiency.
- Causal AI: AI focused on identifying root causes rather than generating content, which Holiday distinguishes from generative AI for its ability to explain why something happened rather than predict or hallucinate.
