Background

Aaron Michel is a Partner at 1984 Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm he joined at its founding in late 2017. Before entering venture capital, Michel was an operator and entrepreneur. He co-founded and served as CEO of PathSource, an edtech startup that built the world's largest library of short online informational career interviews on video along with tools connecting education, careers, lifestyle, and budget planning. PathSource became the No. 1 ranked career app and No. 2 college app on the Apple App Store before being acquired by AcademixDirect in March 2017.

Prior to PathSource, Michel created Fantasy Politics, an online game designed to engage young voters ahead of the 2012 presidential election -- essentially "fantasy football for politics." The game partnered with organizations including Rock the Vote and the National College Republicans, and received coverage from USA Today, Politico, CNET, VentureBeat, and Hearst Television. Michel received the Innovation Rockstar award from the Boston Business Journal and Mass High Tech in part for this work.

Michel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Policy, Politics, and Law from Boston University (2003), an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He was named to Venture Capital Journal's "40 Under 40" list in 2020.

Investment Thesis & Focus

1984 Ventures focuses exclusively on seed-stage companies using software to tackle "unsexy and antiquated industries." The firm deliberately avoids hype-driven sectors such as blockchain, AR/VR, and space tech, instead backing founders who are digitizing and modernizing overlooked, legacy-driven markets. Michel has stated that entrepreneurs can build billion-dollar companies "without going out and splitting the atom," and that avoiding hype provides better risk-adjusted returns.

When evaluating companies, Michel prioritizes: (1) problem validity -- is this solving a real, painful problem? (2) team quality -- are these the best people for this particular challenge? (3) market size -- is it a multi-billion dollar opportunity? (4) product-market fit signals -- are relevant KPIs trending positively? and (5) industry dynamics -- favorable tailwinds versus headwinds. He strongly prefers experienced teams with mediocre initial ideas over inexperienced teams with seemingly great concepts, acknowledging that most companies pivot one to two times before finding their model.

The firm's core sectors include enterprise applications, fintech, healthcare, SaaS, e-commerce, and PropTech. 1984 Ventures typically does not take board seats, preferring to be a supportive, founder-friendly investor. The firm has built its reputation as one of the first doors to knock on when building a company that is disrupting how residential real estate appraisals are done, changing the nature of warehousing, or tackling similarly unglamorous but massive markets.
