Background
Aaron Miscenich is a seasoned technology ecosystem builder, investor, and entrepreneur support professional with over two decades of experience spanning the capital industry, university research commercialization, and technology incubation. Born and raised in New Orleans, he holds a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico and an M.B.A. in Finance and General Management from Tulane University. He began his career with a decade in the capital industry, where he managed equity investments, alternative finance and mezzanine lending, and senior debt transactions -- including oversight of a $2.4 million evergreen fund providing diverse financing to startups and emerging companies.
In October 2004, Miscenich was appointed President and CEO of the New Orleans BioInnovation Center (NOBIC), a $47 million nonprofit life-science business incubator in downtown New Orleans focused on commercializing university-based technologies. Over his 14-year tenure, he built NOBIC into a nationally recognized incubator that helped more than 250 emerging life-science companies raise over $200 million in private and public capital. He also oversaw the BioFund, an early-stage investment vehicle that deployed capital into roughly 30 companies. BioFund portfolio companies collectively raised above $250 million in follow-on private funding and created more than 1,000 jobs in the U.S. Notable portfolio companies that emerged during his tenure include Fluence Analytics (acquired by Yokogawa Electric Corp. of Japan in 2023), AxoSim (neuroscience drug discovery platforms), and BioAesthetics (raised $2.5 million Series A). In parallel, he served as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at Tulane University and later at Loyola University New Orleans.
Beyond NOBIC, Miscenich served as interim Executive Director of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center (LCRC), chaired LouisianaBIO (the state affiliate of the Biotechnology Industry Organization) from 2009 to 2019, held a board seat on the Association of University Research Parks (AURP), and was President of the Rotary Club of New Orleans (2012--2013), having been a member since 1996. In May 2019, he became a Principal at Works Progress Advisory, a New Orleans-based consulting firm. Later that year he relocated to Maryland to become Executive Director of bwtech@UMBC, a 70+ acre research and technology park affiliated with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, housing over 130 companies in more than 525,000 square feet of office and lab space. He was selected for the Leadership Maryland Executive Program as part of the Class of 2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Miscenich's investment philosophy is rooted in translating university research into commercially viable businesses. His primary sectors of focus include life sciences, biotechnology, medical devices, therapeutic drugs, green technologies, and health-tech. He favors early-stage companies -- seed and pre-seed -- that are spinning out of academic research institutions and have a clear path from laboratory proof-of-concept to market. His approach emphasizes rigorous feasibility analysis, market and competition assessment, full business plan development, and structured capital stacks (equity, convertible debt, and loan financing). He has described his vision as building "a convener and connector hub, focused on diverse and inclusive innovation and successful commercialization," uniting researchers, students, industry, and government stakeholders. His experience managing an evergreen fund and overseeing the BioFund indicates comfort with patient capital and long time horizons typical of life-science ventures.
Notable Investments & Portfolio Involvement
- Fluence Analytics -- Tulane University spin-out providing real-time polymer reaction monitoring tools. Received BioFund Series A funding under Miscenich's leadership. Acquired by Japan's Yokogawa Electric Corp. in 2023 (the most prominent exit from NOBIC's portfolio).
- AxoSim -- Neuroscience drug discovery platform company (NerveSim, BrainSim). BioFund-sponsored; headquartered at NOBIC. Created or retained over 400 full-time positions.
- BioAesthetics -- BioFund portfolio company that raised a $2.5 million Series A round.
- ~30 additional BioFund portfolio companies -- Under the BioFund's umbrella during his NOBIC tenure, companies collectively raised $250+ million in follow-on private funding and hired 1,000+ employees.
- bwtech@UMBC tenant companies -- As Executive Director, oversees ecosystem support for 130+ companies in Baltimore's research park, though his role here is primarily operational rather than direct investment.
