Background
Aaron Patzer was born in 1980 in Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up in Evansville, Indiana, where he graduated from Central High School. He earned triple bachelor's degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering from Duke University in 2002, followed by a master's degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 2004. Patzer began his career during the late-1990s internet boom, working at startups including Getawebsite.com and Miadora.com (an online jewelry retailer). After completing his graduate studies, he served as a technical lead and architect at Nascentric's San Jose division, building deep experience in both engineering and product development before turning to entrepreneurship full-time.
In 2006, Patzer single-handedly built the full alpha version of Mint.com, a personal finance management platform, coding it in Java J2EE and MySQL. After meeting Josh Kopelman (founder of Half.com) and Rob Hayes at a STIRR networking dinner in late 2006, he secured seed funding and launched Mint.com at the TechCrunch40 conference in September 2007, winning the $50,000 first prize. The product rapidly gained traction, reaching an estimated 1.5 million users within two years. On September 14, 2009, Intuit announced its acquisition of Mint.com for $170 million -- exactly two years after its TechCrunch40 debut. Patzer stayed on at Intuit as VP of Product Innovation before departing to pursue new ventures. The Mint.com exit established Patzer as one of the most successful young entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, earning recognition from Inc. magazine's Top 30 Under 30 and Fortune magazine's Top 40 Executives Under 40.
Following Mint, Patzer founded Fountain, an on-demand expert advice marketplace that connected users with professionals across industries including medicine, law, and home improvement via text and video calls. Launched in October 2014, Fountain was acquired by Porch.com in October 2015, after which Patzer served briefly as a product advisor before relocating overseas. In January 2017, Patzer moved to Auckland, New Zealand, and co-founded Vital Software (now Vital, at vital.io) with Dr. Justin Schrager, an emergency medicine physician at Emory University. Vital builds AI-powered patient experience software for hospital emergency departments and inpatient care, integrating directly with electronic health record systems. The company raised a $5.2 million seed round in 2019 and a $24.7 million Series B led by Transformation Capital with support from Threshold Ventures, bringing total funding above $40 million. As of 2025, Vital serves over 7 million patients annually across 100+ hospitals and 31 health systems, including CommonSpirit Health, Mercy Health, and Emory Healthcare, and is ranked #1 in patient experience by KLAS.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Patzer's angel investing approach is shaped by his deep technical background and his experience building consumer and enterprise products from zero to successful exit. His core principles include:
- Seed-stage focus: Invests primarily at the seed stage, writing checks in the $25K-$250K range to back founders at the earliest stages of company building.
- Technical founders with domain expertise: Having built Mint's alpha version himself, Patzer gravitates toward founders who combine strong engineering ability with deep knowledge of the problem they are solving.
- Healthcare and fintech concentration: The bulk of his portfolio reflects his two primary areas of entrepreneurial experience -- personal finance and healthcare technology. He has invested in multiple healthtech startups (HealthTap, Carbon Health, Radix Health) and fintech companies (Honest Dollar, Gusto).
- Consumer-facing products with network effects: Patzer favors products that solve real consumer pain points and can achieve rapid adoption, as he demonstrated with Mint.com's growth to 1.5 million users in two years.
- Data-driven decision making: Consistent with his engineering background, Patzer values startups that leverage data and AI to create measurable improvements in user outcomes.
- Advisor and operator involvement: Beyond capital, Patzer frequently takes on advisor roles with portfolio companies (e.g., Radix Health), contributing product and technical guidance drawn from his experience scaling Mint and Vital.
