Aaron VanDevender

Aaron VanDevender, PhD, is a physicist-turned-investor and entrepreneur with deep expertise in quantum computing, biotechnology, and advanced scientific research. He holds an SB in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2001) and a PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His unique background bridges cutting-edge academic research, government scientific work, venture capital, and entrepreneurship.

VanDevender began his career as a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from 2007 to 2010, where he designed single-photon and single-atom quantum computers. During this period, he advanced the quantum-mechanical theory for microscopic black holes and dark matter, patented the fastest transparent optical switch, and co-invented Yoctotechnology. His work at NIST established him as a leading researcher in quantum computing and theoretical physics.

From 2010 to 2012, VanDevender transitioned to the private sector, serving as a physicist at Halcyon Molecular, a Founders Fund-backed genetics startup developing next-generation DNA sequencing technology. Though Halcyon Molecular ultimately shut down in 2012, the experience provided VanDevender with firsthand insight into deep tech entrepreneurship and the challenges of commercializing breakthrough scientific innovations. Before joining Founders Fund, he served as CTO of The Prosperity Institute, an enterprise war games firm.

In 2012, VanDevender joined Founders Fund as Chief Scientist and Principal, a role he held until 2020. In this capacity, he monitored the scientific impact of the portfolio, worked directly with portfolio companies, assessed emerging technologies, and conducted independent research. In 2020, VanDevender founded Methid, Inc., a biology automation company that uses artificial intelligence to improve the veracity and productivity of biomedical research and diagnostics.
