Background

Aaron VanDevender, PhD, is a physicist-turned-investor and entrepreneur with deep expertise in quantum computing, biotechnology, and advanced scientific research. He holds an SB in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2001) and a PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His unique background bridges cutting-edge academic research, government scientific work, venture capital, and entrepreneurship.

VanDevender began his career as a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from 2007 to 2010, where he designed single-photon and single-atom quantum computers. During this period, he advanced the quantum-mechanical theory for microscopic black holes and dark matter, patented the fastest transparent optical switch, and co-invented Yoctotechnology. His work at NIST established him as a leading researcher in quantum computing and theoretical physics.

From 2010 to 2012, VanDevender transitioned to the private sector, serving as a physicist at Halcyon Molecular, a Founders Fund-backed genetics startup developing next-generation DNA sequencing technology. Though Halcyon Molecular ultimately shut down in 2012, the experience provided VanDevender with firsthand insight into deep tech entrepreneurship and the challenges of commercializing breakthrough scientific innovations. Before joining Founders Fund, he served as CTO of The Prosperity Institute, an enterprise war games firm.

In 2012, VanDevender joined Founders Fund as Chief Scientist and Principal, a role he held until 2020. In this capacity, he monitored the scientific impact of the portfolio, worked directly with portfolio companies, assessed emerging technologies, and conducted independent research. He led early-stage investments in pharmaceuticals, synthetic biology, telecommunications, and quantum computing, leveraging his scientific credentials to evaluate deep tech opportunities that most investors lacked the technical background to understand. His tenure at Founders Fund positioned him at the intersection of frontier science and venture capital.

In 2020, VanDevender founded Methid, Inc., a biology automation company that uses artificial intelligence to improve the veracity and productivity of biomedical research and diagnostics. As Founder and CEO, he continues to apply his expertise in physics, biology, and machine learning to solve critical problems in laboratory automation. Beyond his professional achievements, VanDevender is an eight-time world record holder in formation skydiving, demonstrating his appetite for risk-taking and precision—traits that serve him well in both scientific research and venture investing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

Aaron VanDevender's investment philosophy centers on backing "hard science" companies at the frontier of human knowledge. His approach is distinguished by deep technical evaluation rather than market-driven heuristics, focusing on technologies that require significant scientific breakthroughs to achieve commercial viability. He seeks companies where fundamental advances in physics, biology, or computer science can unlock massive economic value, even if the path to market is long and uncertain.

Core Investment Areas:

Investment Approach: VanDevender's investment process emphasizes first-principles technical evaluation. He seeks founders with deep domain expertise—often PhD scientists or engineers—who are tackling problems that most investors would consider too risky or too technical. He values scientific rigor, reproducibility, and the potential for transformative impact over incremental improvement. His ability to engage at the technical level allows him to identify opportunities that others overlook and provide meaningful strategic guidance to portfolio companies.

  • Quantum Computing: Leveraging his background in quantum physics, VanDevender has invested in companies building practical quantum computers, including PsiQuantum, where he serves as a board member. He focuses on photonic and superconducting qubit approaches with potential for scalable, fault-tolerant systems.
  • Synthetic Biology & Biotechnology: VanDevender targets companies engineering biological systems for therapeutics, diagnostics, and industrial applications. His investments include Emulate (organ-on-a-chip technology), Applied Molecular Transport (oral biologic delivery), and companies developing novel approaches to DNA sequencing and gene editing.
  • Advanced Materials & Physics: He backs companies developing breakthrough materials, optics, and sensing technologies based on novel physics principles.
  • AI-Enabled Scientific Discovery: As demonstrated by his founding of Methid, VanDevender is interested in applying machine learning and computer vision to accelerate scientific research and improve reproducibility in life sciences.
