Background

Ab van Urk is a seasoned Dutch investor and private equity professional with over three decades of experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and management buy-outs. He co-founded MGF (MBO & Groei Fonds) in 2012 alongside partner Paul van Logtestijn, establishing one of the Netherlands' prominent investment firms focused on preserving continuity in family-owned businesses while enabling growth and succession planning.

Ab's educational background combines law and business administration. He began his academic journey studying Law at Utrecht University, where he completed his candidate's degree, before pursuing Business Administration at the Technical University of Delft. This dual foundation in legal and business disciplines has proven instrumental throughout his career in structuring complex transactions and advising business owners.

His professional career launched in 1984 when he completed ABN AMRO Bank's prestigious management development program. He subsequently served as a business director at one of the bank's larger offices, gaining valuable experience in commercial banking and relationship management. Between 1989 and 2002, Ab played a pivotal role in establishing and leading merger and acquisition departments at three of the Netherlands' premier professional services firms: Coopers & Lybrand, Deloitte and Touche, and BDO Accountants and Advisors. During this 13-year period, he developed deep expertise in mid-market M&A transactions and built an extensive network across the Dutch business community.

In 2003, Ab co-founded Rembrandt Fusies & Overnames (Rembrandt F&O) with two partners, a Rabobank-affiliated M&A advisory firm. Under his leadership as partner, Rembrandt F&O grew into a market leader in mergers and acquisitions within their target segment, specializing in transactions involving family-owned businesses in the Dutch SME sector. After nearly a decade building Rembrandt F&O's reputation and client base, Ab transitioned in 2012 to establish MGF, shifting from advisory work to principal investing while maintaining ties to Rembrandt as an associate partner.

Since founding MGF, Ab has served as a member of the firm's two-person Investment Committee alongside Paul van Logtestijn. The committee structure ensures that at least one of the partners is directly involved in every investment trajectory, maintaining quality control and leveraging the partners' combined decades of transaction experience. His role encompasses deal sourcing, due diligence, structuring investments, serving on portfolio company boards, and supporting management teams through growth initiatives and succession transitions.

Investment Thesis & Focus

MGF operates with a clearly defined investment mandate focused on preserving the continuity and fostering the growth of established family-owned businesses in the Netherlands' small-to-medium enterprise (SME) sector. The firm's philosophy centers on being a patient, value-added capital partner rather than pursuing aggressive financial engineering or rapid exits.

Investment Criteria:

Sector Focus: MGF maintains a generalist approach within the SME sector, with demonstrated experience across multiple industries including:

Investment Philosophy: Ab and his partner Paul prioritize investments where MGF can serve as a strategic partner during critical inflection points in a family business's lifecycle—whether that's facilitating generational succession, funding expansion initiatives, or enabling current management to acquire ownership stakes. The firm's approach emphasizes long-term partnerships over short-term financial returns, with a typical holding period that allows management teams to execute multi-year strategic plans. MGF's value proposition includes not only capital but also the partners' extensive M&A experience, board-level guidance, and deep networks within the Dutch business community and financial sector.

The firm deliberately targets situations where traditional bank financing may be insufficient but where the company's fundamentals and management quality justify equity investment. By taking minority positions, MGF aligns its interests with management while providing the capital and expertise needed to accelerate growth or navigate ownership transitions.
