Abbie C. Celniker, Ph.D.

Dr. Abbie C. Celniker is a Partner at Third Rock Ventures, a leading life sciences venture capital firm based in Boston. She joined Third Rock Ventures in 2016, bringing over 30 years of experience in senior R&D and executive leadership roles across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. As a partner, she focuses on the formation, development, and strategy of portfolio companies, working at the intersection of science, business, medicine, and strategic innovation.

Before transitioning to venture capital, Dr. Celniker had a distinguished career as a biotech executive and operational leader. From 2011 onwards, she served as President and CEO of Eleven Biotherapeutics (now Sesen Bio), a clinical-stage company developing targeted protein therapeutics. Prior to that, she was President and CEO of Taligen Therapeutics from 2008 to 2011, successfully leading the company through its acquisition by Alexion Pharmaceuticals. Following the acquisition, she served as Executive Vice President of Translational Medicine at Alexion, where she played a key role in advancing the company's pipeline.

Dr. Celniker's earlier career includes prominent roles at major pharmaceutical companies. She served as Global Head of Biologics at Novartis AG, where she oversaw the biologics division, forged strategic alliances, and led internal discovery and development efforts to build a robust pipeline. She also held the position of Senior Vice President of R&D Strategy and Operations at Millennium Pharmaceuticals (now Takeda), and served as Vice President of Protein Technologies at Wyeth Research facilities. This diverse experience across large pharma, mid-sized biotech, and venture-backed startups gives her a unique perspective on company building and drug development.

Dr. Celniker earned her B.A. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, and her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Arizona. She is actively involved in the biotech community, serving on the board of directors of MassBio (Massachusetts Biotechnology Council), where she has helped spearhead campaigns to increase gender diversity in the biotech industry. She also serves on nonprofit boards including Unitio and T1D, and is a member of the scientific advisory board at Adimab.
