Background
Dr. Abdulla Nadeem Elyas is a Saudi-born entrepreneur raised in Germany who co-founded Careem, the Middle East's largest ride-hailing and super app, which was acquired by Uber in 2020 for $3.1 billion—the largest tech exit in Middle East history at the time. Following the acquisition, Elyas transitioned into angel investing while maintaining leadership roles at Careem and serving on multiple corporate and government advisory boards.
Elyas earned both his Master's degree in Computer Science (1995-2002) and his PhD in Business Administration (2004-2008) from RWTH Aachen University in Germany, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors. Before entering the startup world, he built over a decade of professional experience as a software engineer and management consultant, working with major multinational corporations including Mercedes-Benz, SAP AG, PepsiCo, Vodafone, and SABIC. He also contributed to large-scale projects such as the World Exhibition Expo 2000.
In 2012, Elyas founded enwani, a pioneering cloud-based address solution that tackled the challenge of imprecise addressing systems across the Middle East. The startup gained international recognition, winning the "Most Investable Company 2013" award from Sophia Business Angels in France. In 2014, Careem acquired enwani and brought Elyas on board as a co-founder alongside Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson. The acquisition was strategic: it integrated enwani's proprietary address-coding technology into Careem's platform while bringing Elyas's technical expertise to the leadership team.
Under the co-founders' leadership, Careem grew from a ride-hailing service into a super app offering food delivery, payments, and other services across 100+ cities in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. In January 2020, Uber completed its $3.1 billion acquisition of Careem ($1.4 billion in cash and $1.7 billion in convertible notes), making it the largest ride-hailing acquisition globally outside of China. Notably, Careem continued to operate as an independent subsidiary under its original brand and founding team.
Post-acquisition, Elyas has focused on angel investing in MENA startups, particularly in fintech and enterprise software, while serving as Chairman of Careem's Saudi Arabia operations. He has also taken on influential board roles, including serving his second term on Bupa Arabia's Risk Management Committee and advising Monshaat, the Saudi General Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises.
