Background

Abel Ang is a distinguished healthcare technology executive and investor based in Singapore with over two decades of experience spanning medical device commercialization, venture capital, and global business leadership. His journey into healthcare began at age seven when he witnessed his father's battle with non-smoker lung cancer, an experience that shaped his career trajectory and deep commitment to advancing medical technology and improving patient outcomes worldwide.

Ang serves as Executive Director and Board Member at Economic Development Innovations Singapore (EDIS), an alternative investment management firm founded in 2013 under the chairmanship of Philip Yeo. At EDIS, he plays a central role in the firm's investment strategy, focusing on transformative companies utilizing cutting-edge technology across healthcare, urban solutions, education, and high-tech industrials. The firm has delivered exceptional returns with a 34% gross IRR from direct principal investments and has completed four successful exits since 2018. EDIS operates through two main divisions: principal investments (private equity, debt, bridge/pre-IPO financing, and venture capital from Seed to Series B) and advisory services to major global buyout funds and sovereign wealth funds.

Prior to his current role, Ang served as the founding Group Chief Executive Officer of Advanced MedTech Holdings, a US$300-335M global player in urology devices and services. Under his decade-long leadership, the company quadrupled its revenue and achieved record global revenues of US$335 million in FY2024 (a 15.1% year-over-year increase). Advanced MedTech became one of the top three performers for investment returns within the Temasek portfolio over a three-year period. Ang drove significant innovation during his tenure, increasing R&D investment by 20.8% year-over-year and launching 30 product innovations globally. He retired as Group CEO in July 2024 and now serves as a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Advanced MedTech Investments Holdings.

Before founding Advanced MedTech, Ang held senior executive positions at Hill-Rom Inc. (NYSE: HRC, later acquired by Baxter International), a US$3 billion revenue medical device manufacturer. He served as President for Asia/Pacific operations, where he led the strategy to expand Hill-Rom's presence across the region. He also functioned as Chief Technology Officer with overall responsibility for Hill-Rom's global R&D operations distributed across the United States, Mexico, France, and Singapore. Additionally, he held the position of Vice President and General Manager of Hill-Rom's US$420 million Global Surfaces and Therapy Business unit, and Vice President for International Business Development.

Earlier in his career, Ang served as Senior Advisor to the CEO of Greatbatch Inc. (NYSE: ITGR, now Integer Holdings Corporation), providing strategic guidance on the commercialization of medical device technologies in the cardiac, neurology, vascular, and orthopedic markets. He also headed the global Medical Technology and Biotechnology industry groups at Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB), where he played a key role in attracting multinational corporations and fostering the growth of Singapore's biomedical sciences ecosystem.

Ang holds a Master of Science in Computational Biology from Rutgers University in New Jersey, which he pursued on an EDB scholarship. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2012. He is an Adjunct Professor at Nanyang Business School (NTU Singapore) and Waseda University in Japan, where he teaches in their respective MBA programs. His thought leadership extends to published articles on healthcare employment and labor markets, including "Healthcare Jobs in the Post-COVID World" (April 2020) and advocacy for gender diversity on corporate boards.
