Background
Abel S. Osorio is a Partner at Turnspire Capital Partners, a transformational private equity firm based in New York City. He joined Turnspire in 2016 and was promoted to Partner in September 2019, recognizing his significant contributions to the firm's investment activities and organizational development.
Osorio earned his B.A. degree in economics and politics, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from New York University. He went on to receive his M.B.A. degree with honors from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation's premier business programs. His strong academic foundation in both economics and business positioned him well for a career in private equity and special situations investing.
Before joining Turnspire, Abel co-founded Montserrat Capital Management from 2014 to 2016, a value-oriented investment partnership focused on event-driven and special situations opportunities. This entrepreneurial experience gave him valuable insights into investment strategy and portfolio management. Prior to Montserrat, he served as Vice President at Battery Ventures, a venture capital and private equity firm with over $7 billion in assets under management, where he sourced, structured, and led the execution of leveraged buyouts in North America and Europe across the industrial and technology sectors.
Osorio began his private equity career as an Associate at H.I.G. Capital, a global private equity investment firm with over $25 billion of equity capital under management. Before entering private equity, he spent several years as an investment banker at Thomas Weisel Partners, where he advised middle-market companies on mergers and acquisitions. This comprehensive background across investment banking, venture capital, and private equity has equipped him with a unique perspective on value creation and operational transformation.
At Turnspire, Osorio has been instrumental in multiple dimensions of the firm's growth. He spearheaded the launch of Turnspire's Executive Operator Network and Executive in Residence Program, initiatives designed to bring operational expertise to portfolio companies. Managing Partner Ilya Koffman has praised Osorio, noting that he "represents Turnspire with the integrity that we are known for in the marketplace" and describing him as "a true leader."
Investment Thesis & Focus
Abel Osorio focuses on private equity investments in high-quality businesses that have reached strategic, financial, or operational inflection points. His investment approach emphasizes hands-on operational improvement over financial engineering, working closely with management teams and operating partners to develop and execute transformative business plans. This operationally intensive strategy aligns with Turnspire's core philosophy of creating value through operational excellence rather than relying primarily on leverage.
At Turnspire, Osorio is active across all facets of the firm's investment activities, including leading the formulation of investment theses, negotiating and executing highly complex transactions, and collaborating with management teams to drive meaningful change. The firm targets companies with revenues between $50 million and $400 million across diverse sectors including aerospace/defense, automotive, machinery, chemicals, consumer products, building materials, food and beverages, logistics, metals, packaging, and plastics.
Osorio's particular expertise lies in special situations investing, including carve-outs, restructurings, and other complex transactions that require sophisticated structuring and execution capabilities. His background in both venture capital and traditional private equity gives him the flexibility to evaluate opportunities across the capital structure and business lifecycle. He seeks businesses with strong fundamentals that can benefit from strategic repositioning, operational improvements, and organic or acquisition-driven growth initiatives to become industry leaders within their respective niches.
