Abel Wurmnest

Abel Wurmnest serves as Executive Director of the Anschutz Family Foundation, a position he has held since joining the organization in 2011. In this capacity, he provides strategic leadership and works directly with grantseekers and grantees throughout Colorado to understand and champion their work. Over the past 14+ years, Abel has traversed the state connecting with nonprofit organizations and fellow philanthropists to strengthen communities and advance philanthropy across Colorado, with a particular focus on rural areas.

Abel holds a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science degree in Post-Secondary Educational Leadership from San Diego State University (2006-2008). His educational background in both agriculture and leadership development uniquely positioned him for his role supporting Colorado's diverse nonprofit ecosystem, which spans urban centers and rural communities alike.

Prior to his tenure at the Anschutz Family Foundation, Abel gained experience working at what is now known as Philanthropy Colorado (formerly Colorado Association of Funders), as well as at the University of Denver. He also served as Director of Student Activities at San Diego State University - Associated Students during his time in California. These experiences gave him valuable insight into nonprofit management, community engagement, and the operational challenges facing mission-driven organizations.

In 2019, Abel was honored as one of the Denver Business Journal's 40 Under 40 award recipients, recognizing his impact on Colorado philanthropy and nonprofit leadership. When not working, Abel volunteers on several nonprofit and special district boards throughout Colorado, enjoys outdoor recreation across the state, and spends time with his nieces and nephews. His deep commitment to Colorado communities is evident both in his professional work and personal involvement.

This philosophy drives the foundation's grantmaking approach, which emphasizes self-sufficiency, community development, and programs aimed at vulnerable populations.

Investment Approach: The foundation exclusively funds Colorado-based nonprofit organizations, with a strong emphasis on rural communities. In 2025, 60% of grants were directed toward nonprofits serving Colorado's rural communities or providing statewide services. The foundation accepts online grant applications twice yearly during spring and fall funding cycles. Abel works directly with applicants to understand their initiatives and ensure alignment with the foundation's strategic priorities.

Value-Add to Grantees: Beyond financial support, Abel provides strategic guidance to nonprofit leaders and facilitates connections within Colorado's philanthropic community. He has been instrumental in advancing Colorado Rural Philanthropy Days, a twice-yearly initiative that increases foundation support to rural areas of the state and connects rural nonprofits with potential funders.
