Background
Abhay Deshpande is a distinguished serial entrepreneur with over two decades of experience building pioneering technology ventures in India. His innovative mindset, leadership capabilities, and expertise in digital marketplaces have established him as one of India's most resilient and forward-thinking technology entrepreneurs.
Deshpande began his entrepreneurial journey in 1998 with Malamall.com, recognized as one of India's first e-commerce ventures during the early days of the internet. Operating during the dot-com bubble, Malamall was ahead of its time but faced significant challenges in an underdeveloped e-commerce ecosystem. Following the venture's closure, Deshpande demonstrated remarkable resilience by channeling his learnings into his next venture.
In May 2007, Deshpande founded MartJack in Hyderabad, India's first Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company specializing in enterprise e-commerce platforms. MartJack was a multichannel platform built on a subscription model that allowed retailers to build their own e-commerce portal and manage end-to-end e-commerce operations. Despite being turned down by numerous venture capitalists, Deshpande bootstrapped and grew MartJack into a successful enterprise, eventually achieving a multi-million dollar exit when it was acquired by Capillary Technologies in 2015. This exit is particularly notable as it occurred without traditional VC backing, demonstrating Deshpande's ability to build sustainable businesses.
In 2016, Deshpande co-founded Recykal alongside Abhishek Deshpande, Ekta Narain, Vikram Prabakar, and Anirudha Jalan. Recykal is a digital technology company and clean-tech startup based in Hyderabad, specializing in waste management and recycling with a mission to foster a circular economy. Under Deshpande's leadership as Founder & CEO, Recykal has reshaped the conversation around waste management and recycling in India, mainstreaming sustainability, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, and circularity principles.
Recykal launched its marketplace platform in 2017 to connect waste collection centers with recyclers. The platform enables recyclers to buy and sell different materials including plastic, paper, and e-waste. The company's revenue model is two-pronged: it earns a marketplace commission on each transaction between waste generators and recyclers and also charges a SaaS fee from enterprise customers. Recykal's gross waste value (GWV) has been growing 3-4X annually, reaching Rs 748 crore ($91.2 million) in the year ended March 2023.
Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, Deshpande has also been active as an angel investor since 2017, participating in seed-stage investments in technology startups. His investment philosophy reflects his deep operational experience and focus on enterprise applications and consumer technology sectors.
Investment Thesis & Focus
As an angel investor, Abhay Deshpande focuses on early-stage seed investments in technology companies, particularly in sectors where he has deep operational expertise. His angel investing journey started in 2017 through perspectAI, and he has since built a focused portfolio of 4 companies.

What He Looks For: Deshpande's investment philosophy is informed by his own entrepreneurial journey, including early failures and eventual success. As someone who built MartJack without VC backing and achieved a successful exit, he likely values founder resilience, bootstrapping mentality, product-market fit, and sustainable business models. His background in pioneering SaaS and e-commerce platforms in India suggests he seeks founders building innovative technology solutions in underserved markets.
