Background
Abheek Anand is a fourth-generation venture capitalist and entrepreneur who spent 12 years as a Managing Director at Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia (later rebranded as Peak XV Partners). He is an engineer turned founder turned investor with deep experience across product management, entrepreneurship, and venture capital. Anand holds a B.Tech in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi (1997-2001), an MS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland (2002-2004), and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business (2007-2009).
After completing his undergraduate degree at IIT Delhi, Anand began his career working in product management roles at leading technology companies including VMware and Google. His entrepreneurial journey began in 2010 when he co-founded TagTile alongside Soham Mazumdar in San Francisco. TagTile was a mobile loyalty and rewards platform that provided free hardware to merchants and allowed customers to collect and redeem loyalty points, coupons, and rewards through Android or iOS apps. The startup gained significant traction and was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 (some sources report 2013). Following the acquisition, Anand joined Facebook as a product manager in Menlo Park, where he ran ads product teams.
In 2013, Anand made a pivotal decision to leave the San Francisco Bay Area and join Sequoia Capital India. Nearly 12 years later, in a February 2025 LinkedIn post reflecting on his tenure, he wrote: "Nearly 12 years ago, I left San Francisco for India to start a new chapter with Sequoia Capital. It has been an extraordinary journey." He later moved to Singapore to co-lead Sequoia's Southeast Asian investment practice, focusing on early-stage investments in one of the world's fastest-growing technology ecosystems. During his tenure, he invested in over 30 companies and served on multiple boards, becoming one of the most prominent venture capitalists in Southeast Asia.
In February 2025, Anand announced his departure from Peak XV Partners (the rebranded entity following Sequoia's global split in mid-2023), stating that he was "excited to return to building — at the intersection of these worlds," suggesting a return to entrepreneurship or operational roles. His exit, along with fellow Managing Director Shailesh Lakhani, marked a significant leadership transition for Peak XV amid a broader industry shift and strategic repositioning.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Abheek Anand's investment philosophy centers on backing "missionary founders" with transformative visions rather than "mercenary founders" chasing short-term gains. He emphasizes the importance of "why now" as a critical question for founders, focusing on market inflection points driven by technology adoption, regulatory changes, or shifting consumer behavior. His approach combines deep sector expertise with a strong bias toward founders who demonstrate product innovation, customer obsession, and the ability to build sustainable, capital-efficient businesses.
Sector Focus: Anand has invested across consumer internet, financial services (fintech and payments), B2B software and services, edtech, healthtech, and deep technology. He favors "digital businesses built locally but capable of serving global markets" without heavy physical infrastructure requirements, allowing for rapid scaling with strong unit economics.
Stage & Geography: While Sequoia/Peak XV invests across all stages, Anand focused primarily on early-stage investments (seed through Series B) in India and Southeast Asia. He was instrumental in Sequoia's Southeast Asian expansion, leveraging the firm's Surge program (offering up to $2 million in seed investments) and leading growth-stage rounds. He maintained that stage matters less than "the founders' vision coupled with market opportunity," often leading or co-leading rounds in high-conviction opportunities.
Investment Criteria Post-Pandemic: Following the COVID-19 pandemic and market correction of 2022-2023, Anand publicly emphasized a fundamental shift: "Growth at all cost, whether it's early or late stage, is a thing of the past." He now prioritizes companies with clear paths to profitability, strong unit economics, defensible business models, and capital efficiency. He supports portfolio companies through rigorous business model reviews, product innovation, customer retention strategies, and disciplined expansion rather than growth-at-all-costs strategies.
