Background

Adam Burrows is a co-founder and Managing Director of Range Ventures, a Denver-based early-stage venture firm he launched with fellow operator Chris Erickson. Before investing, Burrows built his reputation as an operator inside two of Colorado's best-known tech companies. As Senior Vice President and General Manager at HomeAdvisor, he was part of the executive team that grew the company from roughly $100M to more than $1B in revenue, culminating in a 2017 public listing that was Colorado's largest tech IPO. He then became the first C-level executive at Guild Education, where he helped the company raise its Series C and land its largest enterprise clients on the way to a $1B+ valuation.

Burrows began his career in business strategy at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School, and he is affiliated with the University of Colorado's Silicon Flatirons Center. This operator-heavy résumé is central to how he positions himself as an investor — someone who has personally scaled companies through the hard parts rather than a career financier.

Range Ventures was announced in December 2020 with a debut fund of $23 million, backed by nearly 100 limited partners including CrossFit CEO and former Datalogix founder Eric Roza. The firm's stated mission is to back "the most ambitious founders in Colorado tech," making pre-seed and seed investments across the Denver–Boulder ecosystem. Range has since built a portfolio of roughly 27 companies across two funds and has been expanding (a Fund III has been referenced as forthcoming), with Burrows and Erickson joined by principal Hayfa Aboukier.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage & checks: Concentrates on pre-seed and seed rounds in Colorado, with the fund targeting ~25 investments and an average initial check near $750K; participates in larger rounds up into the low seven figures.
  • "Consensus founders before they're consensus": Range aims to identify founders with "unique, hard-earned, and hard-to-replicate insights" — often in "overlooked, unsexy, or 'too hard' categories" — before the broader market recognizes them.
  • Operator's lens: Burrows invests through the eyes of someone who has scaled companies, emphasizing disciplined founder communication and empathetic support through the grind of scaling.
  • Backs outliers: He has described looking for "outliers who go through hard stuff" and for founders who are "more intelligent, more capable, and more scrappy" than he is.
  • Ambition over quick exits: The firm explicitly favors founders trying to build billion-dollar category winners, not those seeking a fast acquisition after a seed round.
  • Geographic conviction: Range is deliberately Colorado-focused rather than spreading capital nationally, betting on the Front Range talent pool.
