Background

Adit Dawda is a Mumbai-based private-equity investor with roughly two decades of experience across PE investing, risk management and investment banking. He is a Co-Founder, Director and founding-team member of India SME Investments, an India-centric private equity firm dedicated to backing small and medium-sized businesses and helping them institutionalize and scale. He holds an MBA in Finance from Mumbai University.

Before India SME Investments, Adit was part of a mid-market PE fund managing a portfolio of roughly INR 150 billion across small and mid-market Indian companies — the tenure that connects him to BanyanTree Finance, where his contact email ([hidden]) and the "Vice President" title in the source stub originate. BanyanTree Finance, founded in 2008, manages and advises the BanyanTree India Growth Capital and BanyanTree Growth Capital I & II funds (~US$300 million raised across three funds) that invest growth capital for significant minority stakes in Indian mid-market companies.

Earlier in his career, Adit worked in corporate and investment banking at two global banks. At Citibank he handled risk management for large corporates as part of the India Corporate Banking team, overseeing a portfolio of about US$36 billion. At Bank of America he was involved in credit underwriting / risk management and investment-banking functions for global and Indian corporates. This banking-and-PE background — credit, risk and growth capital for established but under-institutionalized companies — shapes the kind of investing he does today.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backs small and medium Indian businesses, frequently family-run companies in Tier 2/3 centers, with a mandate to "create long-term value for companies, communities, and investors."
  • Invests growth / early-growth capital (seed through Series A/B), and in select cases supports restructuring, institutionalization and control transactions — not just writing a cheque but professionalizing operations, governance and follow-on fundraising.
  • Sector-agnostic by design; the portfolio ranges across fintech, defence, energy, retail/fashion, construction materials and software, reflecting a "good business fundamentals over hot sector" orientation.
  • Comfortable co-investing alongside marquee capital (e.g., Synergy Capital, Motilal Oswal, prominent HNIs), signaling a syndicate-friendly, growth-round approach rather than sole-lead angel bets.

Notable Investments

  • SBL Energy — industrial explosives / energy company; part of a ₹325 crore growth-capital round (Feb 2024) raised alongside Synergy Capital and investor Mukul Mahavir Agrawal.
  • Kushal's — silver jewellery and fashion retail chain; India SME supported business restructuring, institutionalization of family operations and follow-on fundraising.
  • KreditBee — digital lending / fintech platform that has since reached unicorn status.
  • SmartCoin — micro-lending fintech for underserved borrowers (later acquired).
  • PolicyBoss — online insurance distribution platform.
  • Sagar Defence Engineering — autonomous/unmanned maritime systems; defence-sector Series B.
  • Redbrick Offices — managed / flexible office-space provider (seed-stage).
  • Bonkers Corner — streetwear / fashion brand (Series A).
  • Magicrete — construction materials (AAC blocks / prefab) company.
  • Mantra Softech, Citykart, Annapurna, Simoolo, TMC India — additional portfolio companies across biometrics/AI, value retail and consumer/industrial segments.
