Background

Ady Adefris is a founding member of Ion Pacific, joining at the firm's inception in 2015, and today serves as its Chief Operating Officer and a Managing Director. In that role he oversees the day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives of the firm, working alongside co-CEOs and managing partners Itamar Har-Even and Michael Joseph. Ion Pacific is a Hong Kong–licensed (SFC Type 4 & 9) and US SEC–registered investment firm that has become an early mover and global leader in structured secondary opportunities within the venture-stage technology sector, managing roughly $700 million in assets.

Before moving into investment management, Adefris spent more than a decade practicing law across New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Immediately prior to Ion Pacific he was a U.S. securities and capital markets lawyer at Ashurst in Hong Kong, and before that a member of the Banking, Capital Markets and Restructuring Group at White & Case in Hong Kong, advising on numerous transactions across the Asia-Pacific region. This securities, capital-markets and restructuring background maps directly onto Ion Pacific's specialty in structured investments and liquidity solutions.

On the education side, Adefris earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia (1998), a graduate degree from the University of Amsterdam (2000), and his law degree (J.D.) from Georgetown University Law Center (2004).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Ion Pacific's stated thesis centers on "structured investments in secondary opportunities within the venture-stage technology sector," designed to combine downside protection with uncapped upside potential.
  • The firm targets GPs, LPs and founders who are seeking liquidity, while preserving exposure to future asset appreciation — a distinctive angle versus traditional primary venture rounds.
  • Sector emphasis is technology-led, spanning fintech, healthcare/biotech and life sciences, enterprise and productivity software, and consumer/brand-driven businesses.
  • Global mandate across North America, Europe and Asia, expressed through specialized vehicles: Stonecutter (structured secondaries, since 2018), Pathway (life sciences, launched 2021), and a Southeast Asia Opportunities fund (2022).
  • Check sizes are not disclosed publicly; the firm positions itself as flexible, sizing to the situation and structure rather than to a fixed band.
