Background
Ahmed El Alfi is a veteran investor with more than 30 years of early-stage and growth investing experience. He spent the formative part of his career in Southern California and on Wall Street, including roughly a decade at Jefferies & Company (rising to Senior Vice President). He became an independent venture capitalist around 1990 and founded Hybrid Capital Partners, a private investment partnership, that same year. He backed PC Mall ahead of its 1995 IPO and later sold his family's company, Alfigen, to Genzyme in 2004. Fast Company has named him one of the most creative people in the world.
In 2006, El Alfi relocated to Egypt to serve as CEO of EFG-Hermes Private Equity, a move that anchored the rest of his career in building Egypt's technology and startup ecosystem. Between 2010 and 2013 he founded or co-founded a cluster of interlinked institutions: Sawari Ventures (co-founded in 2010 with Hany Al Sonbaty and Wael Amin), the Flat6Labs accelerator (created and funded by Sawari in 2011), Nafham (an Arabic online educational video platform he launched in 2012, with 100M+ free lessons), and Tahrir Alley Technology Park (TATP).
Through TATP and a 2013 partnership with the American University in Cairo (AUC), El Alfi created The GrEEK Campus — Cairo's first technology and innovation park, built on AUC's abandoned downtown campus. It has grown into a hub housing well over a hundred startups and corporations and thousands of high-impact tech jobs. He chairs The GrEEK Campus and Flat6Labs, which now operates across multiple countries in the region.
As Chairman and a founding partner of Sawari Ventures, El Alfi leads one of Egypt's most prominent VC firms. Sawari closed a ~$71M fund in April 2021 (backed by LPs including CDC, the European Investment Bank, Proparco, the Dutch Good Growth Fund, and major Egyptian banks), announced a ~$150M fund initiative in February 2024, and has signaled a second fund ("Sawari Ventures II") targeting around $200M.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in "knowledge-driven companies, which have the potential of bringing transformational changes to the Egyptian economy" — his stated aim is "to create exceptional returns" through such companies.
- Two-track model: ~90% of Sawari's growth fund goes to growth-stage companies (median ticket ~$2–3M), with ~10% allocated to seed-stage deals via the Flat6Labs accelerator.
- Sector emphasis on hardware/deeptech, education, healthcare, cleantech, fintech, SaaS, semiconductors and IoT — areas he views as economically transformational rather than purely consumer plays.
- Strong belief in building ecosystem infrastructure (accelerators, innovation parks, education platforms) alongside writing checks, leveraging Egypt's regulatory environment to crowd in local banks and international development finance.
- Geographic conviction in Egypt and North Africa (Tunisia, Morocco) as underserved, high-potential markets.
