Background
Ajay Chokshi is a Partner at Cortec Group, a New York–based middle-market private equity firm founded in 1984 that acquires controlling interests in specialty consumer, healthcare, distribution, and services businesses. He joined Cortec in 2017 as a Managing Director and was promoted to Partner in 2019. Within the firm he is the healthcare specialist, drawing on an operating and strategy career spent almost entirely in the healthcare-services sector.
Before entering private equity, Ajay was Group President at Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA), a national outpatient-surgery platform, where he sat on the senior leadership team and held general-management responsibility for the company's Midwest and West Groups. Earlier at SCA he served as Vice President of Strategy & Special Projects. His operating experience gives him direct P&L and management perspective that he brings to Cortec's portfolio companies.
Prior to SCA, Ajay was a Senior Director of Strategy & Special Projects at DaVita, Inc. (DaVita HealthCare Partners), one of the largest dialysis and kidney-care providers in the U.S., and before that worked as a management consultant, including a Vice President role at Kaufman Hall, a healthcare-focused strategy and financial-advisory firm.
He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts from The George Washington University.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, cash-generative middle-market companies — this is control-oriented private equity, not seed or angel investing; founders should not expect a small early-stage check.
- Cortec's stated approach: partner with "growing, highly profitable, market-leading businesses led by entrepreneurs, founders, and families" and back management teams to accelerate growth, profitability, and operational efficiency.
- Sweet spot is companies with roughly $40M–$300M in revenue and $10M–$50M of EBITDA, with equity checks in the low-to-mid hundreds of millions.
- Ajay's personal lens is healthcare products and services — he evaluates deals through an operator's eye given his SCA/DaVita background, favoring platforms where operational execution and add-on M&A can drive value.
- Cortec looks for owners/managers who will reinvest materially alongside the fund, aligning incentives through partnership rather than a clean full exit for the seller.
Notable Investments
- Aspen Medical Products — Irvine, CA designer/manufacturer of spinal orthopedic bracing products; Cortec recapitalized the business in June 2019.
- Community Veterinary Partners (CVP) — Northeast-focused network of veterinary hospitals (founded 2009); acquired via Cortec Group Fund V and exited in a competitive sale in October 2019.
