Background

Dr. Akintoye Akindele is a Nigerian investor, financier, lecturer, and author from Lagos State with more than 25 years of experience across banking, private equity, and corporate finance. He holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering (Honours) from Obafemi Awolowo University and a Doctorate in Business Administration (Finance) from the International School of Management, Paris. He is a CFA Charterholder and also holds Microsoft and Cisco technical certifications.

He began his career as an engineer, working with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), before moving into finance as a corporate banker at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), where he underwent intensive corporate-finance training. He subsequently joined private equity firm African Capital Alliance (ACA), where he managed a fund and portfolio companies and was involved in transactions including MTN's entry into Nigeria. Across his career he has managed, raised, and advised on transactions in excess of $5 billion.

In 2006 he founded Synergy Capital Managers, an Africa-focused private equity firm, where he served as Managing Partner until November 2019 and raised the Synergy Private Equity Funds (with a second fund reportedly targeting ~$350M). In 2019 he founded Platform Capital, which he now leads as Chairman and CEO. Platform Capital describes itself as an "active investor" and integrated operating partner rather than a traditional fund, reporting a portfolio exceeding US$2 billion across multiple continents and 100+ companies. He also lectures on finance and entrepreneurship at the University of Lagos Business School and has authored the books *Quitless – The Power of Persistence in Business and Life* and *A Love Affair with Failure*.

Note: In 2023, Nigerian media (THISDAY) reported allegations of financial impropriety against Akindele in connection with business dealings; these were reported as allegations and are included here only for completeness.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • "Capital must have a soul." Akindele frames capital, profit, and impact as "triplets," rejecting the idea that strong financial returns and social impact are mutually exclusive ("People, Profits, and Planet").
  • Takes a long-term, ~15-year view on investments, based on his thesis that this is the timeline required to build market dominance.
  • Operates as an active, majority/owner-operator investor, deploying 70–90% of a portfolio company's capital from the firm's own funds and using operating cash flows as a proprietary fund.
  • Backs "knowledgeable entrepreneurs" (distinct from merely educated ones) with "spiritual vision and unyielding commitment," viewing entrepreneurship as "high-level problem-solving."
  • Sector emphasis on energy-tech, fintech, agri-tech, health-tech, ed-tech, plus healthcare/pharma, consumer goods, manufacturing, mobility, and power — with a strong impact-measurement discipline (tracking "lives impacted" annually).
  • Personal quote he lives by: *"A person should be ashamed to die if hundreds of lives cannot testify that he existed."*
