Background
Alan Chan is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Vectr Ventures, a Hong Kong–based early-stage venture firm and venture studio he co-founded around 2013–2014. He is one of Hong Kong's best-known startup investors and was named Hong Kong's Angel Investor of the Year in 2015. At Vectr he leads the firm's investment strategy and direction, and he also co-founded the affiliated Vectr Equity Partners (2017).
He began his career in finance, working as an analyst in the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs (Asia) covering APAC from roughly 2006 to 2009. He subsequently spent time in his family's business, ITC Corporation, focusing on global alternative and real estate investments, and built and operated companies as an entrepreneur across Greater China, Southeast Asia, Europe and the US — including co-founding the entertainment and ticketing platform iPiao.com (later Yulemao.cn), which he exited.
Chan holds a BA from Duke University (studies spanning Political Science / International Relations, Philosophy, and Economics). He has also served as a mentor with accelerator/early-stage networks such as SparkLabs Global. His investing approach is heavily informed by his own operating experience as a founder rather than purely financial theory — a perspective he emphasizes in interviews and talks.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at pre-seed, seed, and Series A, writing checks of $100K–$5M with a typical sweet spot around $1M.
- Sector interests span AgTech, PropTech/real estate, BioTech, impact/ESG, enterprise software, consumer internet, and fintech.
- Looks for ideas that, in his words, can "change the way we act, think, live, and co-exist."
- Prioritizes founder quality: he looks for openness and authenticity and advises founders to "never fall in love with your product" — i.e., stay willing to pivot based on the market.
- His pitch advice to founders is simply to "be clear" — concise, well-articulated narratives over hype.
- Vectr operates as a venture studio, so beyond capital he offers founders dedicated support teams and studio/product-development resources rather than money alone.
