Alan Rusbridger

Alan Rusbridger is a British journalist and editor best known for leading *The Guardian* as editor-in-chief from 1995 to 2015. During that period he helped move the paper from a print-centered UK newspaper into a global digital news organization with operations in London, the United States, and Australia. Under his editorship, *The Guardian* published major investigations including WikiLeaks cables, phone hacking, tax avoidance, Trafigura toxic dumping, and Edward Snowden’s NSA surveillance disclosures; the Snowden coverage won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, shared with *The Washington Post*.

Rusbridger read English at Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating in 1976. He trained at the *Cambridge Evening News*, joined *The Guardian* in 1979, later became the *Observer*’s television critic, and in 1987 moved to Washington as US editor of the short-lived *London Daily News*. He returned to *The Guardian*, launched the Weekend magazine and G2 section, became deputy editor, and then editor.

After leaving *The Guardian*, Rusbridger became Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, serving from 2015 until 2021. At LMH he launched a Foundation Year for students from under-represented backgrounds, a model later rolled out more broadly across Oxford and Cambridge. He chaired the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism steering committee from 2016 to 2025 and has served on the Committee to Protect Journalists board.

From 2021 to 2025 he edited *Prospect* magazine, where he also co-presented the *Media Confidential* podcast with former *Financial Times* editor Lionel Barber. In January 2026 he joined *The New World* as editor-at-large while continuing public work on journalism, democracy, trust, and information disorder.
