Background
Alec Scheiner (born 1973, Lower Merion, Pennsylvania) is a co-founder and partner of Otro Capital, an operator-led private equity firm focused on sports, media, and entertainment. He earned a B.S.F.S. in International Economics and Latin American Studies from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service (1992) and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center (1997). He began his career as a transactional lawyer at WilmerHale (1997–2004), where he worked on landmark sports deals including Steve Bisciotti's purchase of a control stake in the Baltimore Ravens, Ted Leonsis's acquisition of the Washington Wizards and Capitals, the NBA Hornets' relocation to New Orleans, and transactional work for the Dallas Cowboys.
Scheiner moved into team operations in 2004 when the Dallas Cowboys hired him as General Counsel; he was later promoted to the team's first non-ownership Senior Vice President, serving as a point person and executive-committee member on the construction of AT&T Stadium and the creation of Legends Hospitality (a joint venture with the New York Yankees and Goldman Sachs). He was named to Sports Business Journal's "40 Under 40" in 2010. In December 2012 he left the Cowboys to become President of the Cleveland Browns, overseeing all business operations until he stepped down at the end of March 2016 (staying on as a consultant through the year).
In 2016 Scheiner joined RedBird Capital Partners as a Partner to build and lead its sports investment practice. There he originated investments including OneTeam Partners (co-founded with the NFL and MLB players' associations), Ligue 1 club Toulouse FC, the Rajasthan Royals (IPL), Zelus Analytics, Collectors Universe, and Dream Sports, and served as CEO of the RedBall Acquisition Corp SPAC alongside Billy Beane.
In 2023 Scheiner co-founded Otro Capital with several RedBird colleagues, describing it as an operator-led PE firm with deep expertise across sports, entertainment, and media. The firm's highest-profile deal is its lead role in the ~€200M investment for a 24% stake in Alpine Racing (BWT Alpine F1 Team), a consortium that also drew in athlete and celebrity investors such as Ryan Reynolds, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Rory McIlroy, and Anthony Joshua. Scheiner also serves as an advisor to Fenway Sports Group and is an investor in PGA Tour Enterprises via the Strategic Sports Group.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in "strategic businesses within the sports ecosystem with strong intellectual property and opportunity to scale" — Otro Capital's stated focus.
- Operator-led approach: Otro is positioned as "an operator-led private equity firm with deep expertise across sports, entertainment, and media," leveraging Scheiner's decades of team-operations experience rather than acting as a passive financial backer.
- Stage/structure: institutional private-equity scale (control and significant minority stakes), not angel or seed-stage checks. The Alpine F1 deal illustrates the size — a ~€200M consortium investment.
- Sectors of conviction: leagues/teams, player-association commercial ventures (OneTeam), sports data and analytics (Zelus Analytics), collectibles/IP (Collectors Universe), and emerging digital sports platforms (Dream Sports).
- Looks for durable IP, scalability, and the ability to apply hands-on operational value-add from his team-presidency background.
