Background
Aleks Sobot is a Toronto-based investor and operator who currently serves as Founder & Principal of Aevi Capital and as CEO of ATS Scientific Inc. He is a CFA Charterholder and graduated as an Ivey Scholar from the Richard Ivey School of Business (Western University) — a distinction awarded to top students in the program.
Before founding his own firm, Sobot built a career across private equity, hedge funds, and restructuring advisory. He was an Associate on the investment team of Signal Hill Equity Partners, a leading Canadian middle-market private equity firm, where he sourced, analyzed, and conducted due diligence on new acquisition opportunities, building leveraged-buyout analyses and financial models for potential platform investments. His earlier experience includes an investment/analyst role at one of Canada's largest hedge funds (Anson Funds) and a role at a global advisory firm (Alvarez & Marsal) focused on corporate turnarounds and distressed M&A.
In 2020 he founded Aevi Capital to combine his entrepreneurial mindset with his private-capital background, positioning the firm as a "growth-minded investment firm that provides a flexible, tailor-made succession solution... focused on the wants and needs of the entrepreneur." In October 2021, Aevi Capital — alongside Sage Capital Partners — acquired ATS Scientific Inc., a Burlington, Ontario supplier of analytical instrumentation and laboratory equipment with a 30+ year history. Sobot stepped in as CEO of ATS Scientific following the acquisition and has led its growth since, including add-on M&A.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Succession-driven buyouts, not venture/seed. Aevi targets founders and owners seeking a transition, offering a "flexible, tailor-made succession solution" rather than a one-size-fits-all exit.
- Quality-of-earnings screen: businesses with $1M+ EBITDA (smaller in select cases), margins over 10%, and a high proportion of recurring and/or contracted revenue.
- Industry preference: "stable or growing industries with a low level of concentration" and companies that "exhibit high growth potential in a large, stable industry."
- Control-oriented: Aevi states it "invest[s] in majority stakes" and acts as a "hands-on partner" — Sobot's own move into the ATS Scientific CEO seat exemplifies this operator-investor model.
- What makes him say yes: durable, defensible cash flows plus a genuine ownership-transition need where an entrepreneurial, operationally engaged buyer adds value.
Notable Investments
- ATS Scientific Inc. — Analytical instrumentation and laboratory equipment supplier (Burlington, ON). Acquired October 2021 by Aevi Capital with Sage Capital Partners; Sobot became CEO. His flagship platform investment.
- Folio Instruments Inc. — Add-on acquisition by ATS Scientific (announced ~2024), expanding its instrumentation product and service footprint.
- Signal Hill Equity platform deals — As an Associate he supported diligence and modeling on the firm's Canadian middle-market platform investments; specific deals are not individually attributed to him publicly.
