Background

Alex Bezugly is an Investment Partner and the Chief Financial Officer of Oakfield Capital Partners, a UK private equity firm founded in 2008 that backs small and medium-sized British businesses with capital and hands-on operational support. He brings roughly two decades of private equity and venture capital experience to the firm, where the partners invest their own capital alongside their funds in every deal.

Before Oakfield, Bezugly was CEO of Alfa Capital Partners, a private equity firm that managed around $300 million of investments across Eastern Europe. Earlier, he served as a Director of private equity for Lord Jacob Rothschild's interests at First Arrow and RIT Capital Partners. His earlier career included growth-capital and private-equity work at Lehman Brothers, and he began his career at the Creditanstalt Investment Bank in New York.

Academically, Bezugly received a BA in Economics with distinction from Moscow State University and was a Soros Foundation scholar at the London School of Economics (LSE).

At Oakfield he works alongside Managing Partners Roy Merritt and Michael Patton, with the firm positioning itself as a small team of "decision makers who invest our own capital in every deal" and who take an actively-owned, operationally-led approach to their portfolio companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, UK-based small and medium-sized businesses with significant growth potential, rather than early-stage startups — Oakfield's stated mission is "we grow businesses."
  • Provides both capital and operational/strategic expertise, partnering closely with management teams to drive transformational change in strategy and operations.
  • Comfortable with special situations and complex deals — e.g., acquiring "orphaned" or mothballed operating assets and rebuilding them into successful companies.
  • Sector-agnostic but with demonstrated exposure to healthcare services, technology/telecoms, hospitality/beverages, and professional/business services.
  • Targets long-term partnerships (engagements of 5+ years are referenced in client testimonials) aimed at delivering significant capital gains on exit.
  • The partners invest their own capital in every deal, signalling high conviction and alignment with co-investors.

Notable Investments

  • The Doctors Clinic Group — Private GP / healthcare business; Oakfield first invested (initial ~£1m EIS) in 2015, grew it from a London consumer face-to-face GP business into a multi-channel, nationwide consumer + B2B operation (including two occupational-health acquisitions), and sold it to Spire Healthcare Group plc in December 2022.
  • Coryton — Fuel-blending/specialty fuels company; in 2010 Oakfield partnered with management to acquire a mothballed BP fuel-blending plant, grew it into a global market leader, and sold it to Accesso Technology Group plc, returning ~4.4x to investors.
  • The Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company — Heritage English silk weaver; exited around December 2024.
  • Ingresso — Ticketing/distribution technology business (portfolio company, led by MD Bart van Schriek).
  • Freedom Brewery — UK craft lager brewery.
  • Firstcom Europe — Cloud communications / telecoms services provider.
  • Cordic Ltd — Cambridge-based taxi dispatch technology company; growth investment around November 2018.
  • The Edward Alexander Group, Coryton, Calteq, The CabFusion Network, and Raspberry Beret Group also appear among Oakfield's investments.
