Background

Alex Cooley earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Global Affairs (Summa Cum Laude, With Distinction) from Yale University, completing his studies from 2013 to 2017. He began his finance career as an Investment Banking Analyst in the Industrials Group at Citigroup, where he worked on financial analysis and modeling for industrial-sector clients.

In 2019, Cooley joined SK Capital Partners as an Associate on the firm's investment team. SK Capital is a New York–headquartered private investment firm focused on the specialty materials, chemicals, ingredients, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals sectors, managing roughly $7 billion in assets (figures cited in the $6.6B–$7.9B range across sources). The firm's portfolio companies collectively generate approximately $15 billion in annual revenue, employ more than 20,000 people, and operate close to 200 plants across more than 30 countries. SK Capital pursues buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth equity rather than early-stage venture deals, aiming to transform businesses into higher-performing organizations with stronger strategic positioning and lower operating risk.

Cooley was promoted to Senior Associate in January 2022 as part of SK Capital's annual promotions. He has since moved on from SK Capital to the National Football League (NFL), where public profiles list him as a Director and Senior Director of Strategic Investments, based in New York. As such, the @skcapitalpartners.com email in the stub reflects his former employer; his current professional affiliation is with the NFL.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • As a member of SK Capital's investment team, Cooley's mandate followed the firm's strategy: control and growth-equity investments in specialty materials, chemicals, ingredients, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals, rather than seed or angel checks.
  • SK Capital's stated approach is to "utilize its industry, operating and investment experience to identify opportunities to transform businesses into higher performing organizations with improved strategic positioning, growth and profitability as well as lower operating risk."
  • Deal types: buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth equity — typically established companies (often carve-outs, family-owned businesses, or scaling specialty manufacturers), not pre-revenue startups.
  • In his current NFL role, his focus has shifted to strategic investments on behalf of the league (corporate/strategic investing), a different mandate from traditional PE.

Notable Investments

  • SEQENS — Leader in pharmaceuticals and specialty ingredients; SK Capital acquired a majority shareholding in December 2021.
  • Swixx BioPharma AG — SK Capital announced a definitive agreement to invest in this commercialization-services biopharma platform (announced December 2025, after Cooley's tenure; illustrates the firm's continued life-sciences focus).
