Background
Alex Daberko is a Managing Director at Lotus Infrastructure Partners, the energy and infrastructure investment firm that was previously known as Starwood Energy Group (itself originally part of Barry Sternlicht's Starwood Capital platform). He joined the firm — Lotus' predecessor, Starwood Energy Group — in December 2007 and has spent his entire investing career there, a tenure now exceeding 17 years. In April 2018, while the firm still operated as Starwood Energy Group, he was promoted to Managing Director, with CEO Himanshu Saxena calling the move "a testament to his hard work and astute investment record over the past ten years."
Across that tenure, Daberko has played a central role in the firm's M&A and development transactions spanning conventional generation, solar, biomass, electricity transmission, and renewable fuels. He is best known internally for leading the firm's wind-development efforts, where he financed and constructed six projects totaling more than 1,100 megawatts over roughly four years. His current mandate continues to center on sourcing, executing, and managing investments for the firm.
Before entering principal investing, Daberko worked on the Energy & Power Investment Banking team at Merrill Lynch, where he specialized in commodity and commodity-linked transactions. He holds an M.B.A. from Columbia University and a B.A. in Mathematics & Economics from Yale University.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an infrastructure private-equity principal — not an angel or seed investor — deploying development, acquisition, and project-finance capital into energy assets and operating platforms.
- Sector focus: conventional and renewable power generation, transmission, and renewable fuels (notably renewable natural gas). Per the firm, he "plays a key role in many of the Firm's M&A and development transactions, across conventional and renewable generation, transmission, and renewable fuels."
- Wind is a personal specialty: led the firm's wind buildout, "successfully financing and constructing six projects exceeding 1,100 megawatts."
- Operates via dedicated platforms rather than one-off checks: serves on the boards of BerQ RNG (the firm's renewable-natural-gas platform) and Allium Renewable Energy (its development platform for utility-scale renewable projects).
- Decision lens reflects his banking roots — commodity and commodity-linked exposure, project economics, and financeability of energy infrastructure.
Notable Investments
- BerQ RNG — Lotus/Starwood's renewable natural gas platform, formed to develop and acquire RNG projects; Daberko serves on its Board of Directors.
- Allium Renewable Energy — the firm's development platform for utility-scale renewable projects; Daberko serves on its Board of Directors.
- PNE USA — utility-scale renewable-energy developer acquired by Lotus Infrastructure Partners (announced June 2024), expanding the firm's renewables development pipeline.
- Wind portfolio (6 projects, 1,100+ MW) — a series of wind developments he financed and constructed, his signature body of work at the firm.
- Broader involvement across the firm's solar, biomass, conventional generation, and transmission transactions during his 17+ year tenure.
