Background
Alex Felix is a co-founder of CoinFund, which he helped establish in 2015 as one of the earliest dedicated crypto investment firms. He serves as Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer, leading the firm's investment activity across companies and protocols from pre-seed through Series A. CoinFund today manages roughly $300M, and Felix has been an active researcher and investor in the blockchain space since 2013.
Before founding CoinFund, Felix spent about a decade in traditional finance, with roles spanning research, investing and structuring. Most recently he arranged buyouts for American Capital, a New York–based private equity firm, and earlier held positions at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, RBS and Guggenheim Partners. This private equity and leveraged-finance background informs his approach to underwriting crypto deals.
He holds a degree in Economics and Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College. He is also a former competitive (world-class) ski racer, and brings a builder's bent — he has written e-commerce algorithms and remains an active technology angel investor. Across his personal and professional career he has invested early in 100+ blockchain-focused companies, including the seed rounds of Ethereum and Blockdaemon.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in early-stage crypto/web3 from pre-seed to Series A, where CoinFund can be a hands-on, long-term partner.
- Fund checks generally in the ~$6M–$10M range (sweet spot near $8M), with smaller personal angel checks for earliest-stage bets.
- Core sectors: blockchain/web3 infrastructure, DeFi, fintech, and gaming/eSports.
- Backs DeFi protocols that serve asset owners — a stated thesis that there is an opportunity for DeFi to give asset owners flexibility and yield (e.g., the rationale behind the Drop Money investment).
- Known for embracing non-consensus viewpoints and conviction-driven bets; emphasizes effective token distribution and design as a factor in protocol investments.
