Background
Alex Toh is a Singapore-based entrepreneur-turned-investor and a co-founder of Ruvento Ventures, which he launched in 2011–2012 alongside Vyacheslav ("Slava") Solonitsyn. He serves as a General Partner and helped define the firm's founders-first, hardware-and-deep-tech investment strategy. Ruvento operates as an early-stage VC and angel firm backed largely by family-office capital, running funds with long (~8-year, extendable) lifecycles.
Before venture capital, Toh built and exited operating companies. He was the founder of Asiasoft (Asiasoft Solutions), where he has also been described as Founder & Chairman; the business was acquired by Top Image Systems (NASDAQ: TISA). This operator background — building startups "from scratch" through to trade sales and mergers — is central to how he positions himself with founders.
Beyond his own companies, Toh has mentored and backed a number of Southeast Asian startups that went on to raise follow-on funding, including TradeHero, Travelogy, and ReferralCandy. He is reported to have studied at the National University of Singapore, School of Computing (circa 1998–2001).
At Ruvento, Toh and Solonitsyn assembled a portfolio spanning hardware infrastructure and frontier tech across Singapore, China, and the U.S., and later expanded the platform with a dedicated Southeast Asia-focused early-stage vehicle (Ruvento SEED).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Founders-first, operator-led: Ruvento pitches itself as "a team led by serial entrepreneurs and startup operators," partnering with "exceptional entrepreneurs who are driving disruptive technologies" and supporting them across R&D, product development, management, and launch marketing.
- Hardware with a purpose: The firm's stated stance (via managing partner Solonitsyn) is that "Hardware shouldn't mean gimmicks. We are not investing in things you don't need" — favoring infrastructure hardware, IoT/sensor integration, robotics/drones, and AR/VR over novelty consumer gadgets.
- Early and concentrated: Aims to be first or second money in; ~70% of checks fall between $100K and $500K, with reserves for follow-on up to ~$2M.
- Cross-border: Backs companies across Southeast Asia and the U.S. (historically China), leveraging regional problems (e.g., Singapore's land constraints driving transport/mobility solutions) as investment themes.
- Broadened scope over time: More recent activity extends into AI, biotech, energy, fintech, and healthcare alongside the core hardware/deep-tech focus.
