Background

Alex Villanueva joined Boyne Capital, a Miami-based lower-middle-market private equity firm, in 2018 as part of the firm's portfolio management team, and was formally announced as a new hire (alongside Renny Sie and Danny Koch) in January 2019. His mandate focused on post-acquisition strategy, operational support, and infrastructure building across Boyne's portfolio of middle-market businesses. He was promoted to Vice President on October 6, 2020, and ultimately rose to Principal, spending more than six years at the firm partnering with leadership teams to drive operational improvements and strategic growth.

Before Boyne, Villanueva built a mixed finance-and-operating background. He began his career in Ernst & Young's (EY) Audit & Assurance practice, then moved into corporate M&A as a Senior M&A Analyst at Global Imaging Systems, a Xerox subsidiary, where he managed acquisition execution. He also founded a transportation company that provided eco-friendly transit solutions to communities in the Washington, D.C. area — giving him direct entrepreneurial/operator experience that fit Boyne's stated strategy of recruiting professionals with diverse operating backgrounds to strengthen portfolio company management teams.

Villanueva holds a BS in Finance and an MS in Accounting from the College of William & Mary, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As of 2025, Villanueva serves as Chief Financial Officer of Ventura Air Services, where he shapes and executes financial strategy — overseeing financial planning, reporting, capital allocation, and performance management — as the company scales its charter and aircraft-management operations. This represents a move from an investor/portfolio-operations seat into a full-time operating executive role.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through control-oriented private equity, not angel/seed checks: management and shareholder buyouts, recapitalizations, corporate divestitures, add-on acquisitions, and growth capital.
  • Lower middle market target: companies with roughly $10M–$100M in revenue and $3M–$15M in EBITDA.
  • Sectors: healthcare services, manufacturing and niche manufacturing, consumer products, business & financial services, value-added distribution, and industrial/infrastructure & engineering services.
  • Geography: United States and Canada.
  • Boyne describes its approach as a "value cultivator" model — collaborative relationships with founders/families, control preferred, management continuity preferred but not required, and "realistic and achievable" growth goals. Boyne has been recognized as a "Founder-Friendly Investor" (2025).
  • Villanueva's personal edge sits on the operations and finance side of the thesis — post-acquisition strategy, building infrastructure, and driving operational improvement in acquired companies rather than deal sourcing alone.

Notable Investments

  • ProFusion Industries — Fairlawn, OH designer/manufacturer of polymer-based film and sheet products; recapitalized/platform investment by Boyne (BCM Fund II) announced October 2023, backing R&D, new products, and plant capacity across hospitality, transportation, military and industrial markets.
  • Boyne portfolio breadth — Boyne has invested across 30+ lower-middle-market companies since its 2006 founding, spanning healthcare services, consumer products, manufacturing, business/financial services, and industrial/infrastructure services, deployed from BCM Fund I ($126M, closed 2017) and BCM Fund II.
