Background

Alex Washington is a Managing Director at Wind Point Partners, a Chicago-based middle-market private equity firm founded in 1984. He joined Wind Point in 2002 and focuses on investments in the Industrial Products and Business Services sectors. Before joining the firm, he held roles at private equity firm J.H. Whitney & Co., investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, and management consultancy McKinsey & Company.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in finance from Morehouse College and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He is also a Class VI Kauffman Fellow, a recognition tied to the venture and private-capital leadership development program.

In his current role, Washington leads platform investments and works closely with the executive teams (Wind Point's "prime mover" CEO/operating-partner model) of the companies he sponsors. He currently serves on the boards of Wind Point portfolio companies Ascensus Specialties, Hasa, Quantix, and Turf Masters Brands. His prior board roles include Argotec, Arr-Maz Custom Chemicals, Critica Infrastructure, Dicom Transportation Group, Evans Food Group, Novolex, and Paragon Films.

Beyond Wind Point, Washington serves as a director of Wintrust Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: WTFC) and as a board member of the Art Institute of Chicago, reflecting his standing in the Chicago business and civic community.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in control buyouts of established, cash-flow-positive middle-market companies — this is private equity, not angel or seed-stage investing.
  • Wind Point's signature approach is the "prime mover" model: recruiting an exceptional executive as a partner, then jointly identifying and acquiring a company that fits that executive's industry expertise and value-creation playbook.
  • Frequently pursues a "buy-and-build" strategy, using an initial platform acquisition followed by multiple add-on acquisitions to accelerate scale and strategic transformation.
  • Alex's personal focus areas are Industrial Products and Business Services; firm-wide sectors also include Consumer Products.
  • Target financial profile: companies with roughly $10M–$75M+ EBITDA, with equity checks generally in the ~$30M–$150M range for a controlling stake.
  • Transaction types include leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, industry consolidations, and growth-capital financings.

Notable Investments

  • Turf Masters Brands — residential lawn-care company acquired by Wind Point in December 2025 and immediately combined with portfolio company ExperiGreen; Alex serves on the board. The combined company serves ~400,000 residential customers across 16 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.
  • Ascensus Specialties — specialty chemicals/ingredients maker; Wind Point owned it since 2018 and in 2021 ran a Blackstone Strategic Partners–anchored continuation vehicle to re-invest alongside New Mountain Capital. Alex is a board member.
  • Hasa — pool and water-treatment chemicals company; current Wind Point portfolio company with Alex on the board.
  • Quantix — bulk liquid logistics and chemical distribution platform; current Wind Point portfolio company with Alex on the board.
  • Novolex (prior) — packaging products manufacturer; former board seat.
