Background
Alex Wheldon is a serial product-focused entrepreneur turned operator-angel. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Advertising from OCAD University in Toronto before moving into ad-tech, where he founded and ran Kanary, described as Europe's first DMP/DSP (data-management/demand-side platform), which was acquired in 2014. He is frequently described as a three-time-exit entrepreneur who "helped build five companies before 34."
After Kanary, Wheldon held senior product and marketing leadership roles across several high-growth consumer and fintech companies. He served as Chief Product Officer at Lyst, the fashion marketplace that grew to tens of millions of users, and in a product/marketing leadership capacity (named CMO, and cited elsewhere as CPO) at betting exchange Smarkets, which he helped scale to more than $2 billion in transactions per year. Across these ventures he raised over $100M in venture capital from firms including Draper Esprit, LVMH, Accel, Oxford Capital, and Deutsche Telekom.
In 2018 Wheldon co-founded Rho, a New York–based commercial banking and finance-automation platform for startups and mid-sized companies, where he is Co-Founder, President, and Chief Product Officer. Rho — backed by investors including Inspired Capital (Alexa von Tobel), DFJ Growth, and Tiger Global — has raised on the order of $350M. He has also been associated with Charles Square Ventures.
Alongside his operating role, Wheldon invests personally as an early-stage angel through Wheldon Brothers (Wheldon Bros. Investments), a seed-focused vehicle offering hands-on capital to founders at the earliest stages. The firm presents itself simply as a seed investor with a presence in London, New York, and Toronto.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage: Seed / earliest-stage startups — the firm's tagline is "hands-on venture capital to help exceptional entrepreneurs succeed at the earliest stages of business."
- Approach: Operator-angel — brings direct experience building and scaling ad-tech, marketplace, and fintech products, and product-led company building.
- Sectors: Generalist tech, with demonstrated affinity for fintech and business/productivity software (consistent with his Rho, Smarkets, and Lyst backgrounds).
- Geography: US and UK/Europe, reflecting the firm's London / New York / Toronto footprint.
- What makes him say yes: Product-obsessed founders operating in complex or highly regulated spaces — a theme he returns to in interviews about building great products at Rho.
Notable Investments
- Axis — Participated in Axis's ~$8.25M Seed round (announced Nov 1, 2021) alongside Everett Cook, firstminute Capital, Tiger Global, Kunal Shah, Andrew Kortina, Iqram Magdon-Ismail, Raba Capital, Rally Cap, and Sawari Ventures.
- Judo — Angel investment in a business/productivity software company.
- Rho (co-founder, not an angel deal) — New York fintech / commercial banking platform he co-founded in 2018; has raised roughly $350M from investors including Inspired Capital, DFJ Growth, and Tiger Global.
