Background

Alexander Brand is a Munich-based, two-time entrepreneur turned investor. He studied at TH Karlsruhe and earned a Master of Science in Engineering from Stanford University (1997). He began his career in management consulting at A.T. Kearney, then held several management roles at Siemens AG. He co-founded the mobile-marketing company 12snap AG before co-founding the online baby-and-toddler retailer windeln.de SE, which he led as CEO, growing it to more than €200 million in revenue and taking it public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (IPO 2015).

In May 2018 Brand joined Cipio Partners — a European growth-capital and minority-buyout investor for technology companies, with offices in Munich and Luxembourg — full-time as a Venture Partner focused on new investments and portfolio management. He was promoted to Managing Partner in 2021. During his time at Cipio he was involved in numerous new and existing investments and represented the firm on the boards of Whisbi (Spain), Vitafy (Germany) and Zappi (UK).

In early 2023 Brand co-founded superangels together with Florian Gottschaller (co-founder of Spendit) and Franzi Majer (founder of Catchys / Viqoy). superangels is a BaFin-registered "business angel matching fund": it has hand-selected roughly 20 expert "allstar" business angels from a pool of more than 100, and automatically co-invests ("matches") whenever one of those angels backs a startup. The model lets a single investor gain diversified exposure to many early-stage deals while the fund stays a largely silent co-investor that helps portfolio companies only on request. The founders cite a combined historical track record of 350+ angel investments and roughly 5.9x average ROI at exit.

Today Brand operates primarily through superangels and his personal holding/management vehicle (ABrand Management), while retaining the long-standing Cipio Partners contact details.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the earliest stages (seed / pre-revenue) in technology startups across a wide range of sectors — "anything having to do with bits & bytes," from deep tech and SaaS to AI and climate tech.
  • Uses a matching model: superangels co-invests alongside ~20 vetted expert angels, betting that the conviction of operators with deep domain knowledge is the best deal-sourcing and diligence signal.
  • Emphasizes diversification — one ~€200k ticket spread across up to ~150 early-stage companies — to manage the high variance of angel investing (Gottschaller: "I learned the hard way that I either need to do many angel tickets or none at all").
  • Stays a silent, founder-friendly co-investor: on the cap table but hands-off, providing help only when founders ask.
  • Looks for commercially sharp founders — strong sales ability and command of their numbers; stated red flags ("knockout criteria") include founders who don't control their metrics and visible co-founder conflict.

Notable Investments

  • Doctorflix — e-learning / continuing-medical-education platform connecting doctors and pharma; raised a €2M seed.
  • RedMimicry — cybersecurity platform that automatically simulates multi-stage, threat-actor-style cyberattacks (e.g., LockBit, Black Basta); raised seven-figure seed alongside HTGF and Capital Square.
  • MoleQlar — longevity / health-analytics company.
  • June — legal AI and automation.
  • FarmAct — software platform for the agricultural sector; among superangels' earliest deals.
  • Scanvio Medical — medtech company; backed via superangels' Seed VC II fund (July 2025).
  • Whisbi (Spain) — conversational sales / live engagement platform.
  • Vitafy (Germany) — online health, nutrition and fitness retailer (Cipio invested Dec 2018).
  • Zappi (UK) — automated consumer-insights / market-research platform.
