Background
Alexander Gebauer is a senior European real estate investment executive with a career spanning more than two decades inside and around the Allianz Group. He studied law (Jurastudium) at the Freie Universität Berlin, completing his Zweites Staatsexamen in the 1990s, and also trained at the Federal University for Public Administration in Berlin. His early career was in the broader Allianz organization, where he held roles including Head of the Chairman's Office at Allianz Lebensversicherungs-AG, Director of Human Resources Germany for Allianz Deutschland AG, and Project Leader for Strategic Workforce Planning at Allianz SE.
He joined Allianz Real Estate in 2009 as a Managing Director and became one of the firm's most senior figures over the following 13 years. He served as global Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer and was a voting member of the worldwide Equity Investment Committee. In January 2017 he took interim leadership of Allianz Real Estate France, and effective 1 October 2017 he was appointed CEO of the newly created "West Europe" region — based in Paris and consolidating Allianz's real estate activities across France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain and Portugal. In that role he oversaw a pan-European portfolio reported at roughly €15 billion and sat on the firm's Executive Committee.
Gebauer left Allianz Real Estate on 31 July 2022 after the firm reorganized and promoted Annette Kröger to CEO of a unified European business (Allianz Real Estate was subsequently integrated into PIMCO as PIMCO Prime Real Estate). In March 2023 he joined pan-European investment manager Palm Capital as a Senior Partner, tasked with building the firm's institutional business with a focus on Germany and Western Europe, working alongside managing partner Reda Khatim. He is also a member of the European Executive Committee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and has taken on advisory-board roles in the sector.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as an institutional real estate investor/allocator, not a startup angel — deploying large-scale equity and debt capital into European commercial real estate (offices, logistics, residential, and real-estate credit).
- At Allianz Real Estate he was a voting member of the Equity Investment Committee, sizing deals in the tens-to-hundreds-of-millions rather than seed checks.
- Strong stated interest in technology, data and proptech as levers in real estate. At CREtech London 2021 he keynoted and joined the session "How Data is Changing the Role of the Asset Manager," reflecting his view that data and digitalization are reshaping asset management.
- His stated current thesis (on joining Palm Capital, 2023): *"I am very excited to take on this new challenge which comes at a unique inflection point of European real estate markets, driven by a general risk repricing and enhanced operational focus."* — signaling a focus on repriced, operationally-intensive real estate opportunities.
Notable Investments
- Allianz Real Estate pan-European portfolio (~€15bn) — as West Europe CEO he directed acquisitions and asset management across France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Iberia; specific individual deals are not publicly attributed to him by name.
- Bright (proptech partnership) — Allianz Real Estate under his tenure partnered with the startup Bright, which built a digital "landscape" visualization that evolves with a building's energy-consumption data (illustrative of the firm's proptech engagement, not a personal angel investment).
- No verifiable record of personal seed-stage or angel startup investments was found in the research.
