Background

Alex Shubat is a Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur and angel investor, best known as the co-founder and CEO of Espresa, an employee-benefits and workplace-culture platform he started in 2015 with CTO Raghavan Menon after a dinner conversation about the employee-experience programs run at companies like Google. Espresa, headquartered in Palo Alto, offers Lifestyle Spending Accounts (LSAs), wellbeing, recognition, and community tools ("LSA Plus"), operates in 99+ countries, and has raised roughly $23M from investors including Clear Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Moneta Venture Capital, NewEra, and Ridge Ventures.

Before Espresa, Shubat co-founded semiconductor IP company Virage Logic in 1996, rising from CTO/VP of R&D and COO to president and CEO. He led the company through an IPO and remained CEO until its 2010 acquisition by Synopsys. Earlier in his career he spent about ten years as Director of Engineering at Waferscale Integration (later sold to STMicroelectronics), where he ran design, ASIC, and high-speed memory groups. He subsequently served as CEO of Goji Food Solutions (Goji FS), an NEA-backed food-tech startup.

Shubat is an inventor and technologist as well as an operator: he holds more than 20 patents and has contributed to 25+ technical publications, earning ISSCC awards (a 2002 panel award and a 2005 special-topic session award). Academically, he holds a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Santa Clara University, and an Executive MBA from Stanford University. He serves on the Industry/Engineering Advisory Boards of both Santa Clara University and the University of Toronto.

Alongside running Espresa, Shubat is active as an angel investor, board member, and executive advisor to early-stage startups. He is a member of the Band of Angels (a Bay Area angel group, where he has been associated since around 2011) and of J-Angels, and he has held board and advisory roles at companies such as Cephasonics Ultrasound and Sage Design Automation.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at the seed / early stage, sourcing deals through established Silicon Valley angel networks (Band of Angels, J-Angels).
  • Draws on deep deep-tech and semiconductor/EDA operating experience (Virage Logic, Waferscale) — a natural fit for hardware, chips, and design-automation founders.
  • Also credible in enterprise SaaS / HR-tech (Espresa) and health/med-tech and food-tech (Cephasonics Ultrasound, Goji FS), reflecting a broad but founder-led, technically grounded approach.
  • Tends to back companies where he can add value as a hands-on advisor or board member, not just a passive check — several of his known involvements pair investment with an executive-advisor or board role.
  • Note: publicly disclosed check size and a formal written thesis are not published; his activity is best characterized as individual angel investing plus angel-network syndication rather than a named fund.

Notable Investments

  • Cephasonics Ultrasound — software-based ultrasound systems company; Shubat served as Executive Advisor and Board Member.
  • Sage Design Automation — EDA / semiconductor design-automation startup; Shubat served on the Advisory Board.
  • Band of Angels portfolio — as a member, participates in the group's early-stage Bay Area deal flow (Band of Angels' notable investments historically include companies such as Life360 and Aperia Technologies; these reflect the network rather than confirmed personal deals).
  • (Specific individual angel checks and outcomes are not publicly itemized.)
