Alexis Dormandy

Alexis Dormandy trained as a doctor at the University of Oxford (MA, 1990–1993) before starting his career at McKinsey. He spent the formative part of his career at the Virgin Group, where he rose to Group Director responsible for many of Virgin's new business launches, and was a founding director of both Virgin Mobile and Virgin Active. He subsequently became VP Consumer and Chief Marketing Officer at Orange, and later worked with European private equity firm Candover. He also served as European Chairman of RED, the AIDS charity co-founded by Bono.

Dormandy is a repeat technology founder. In 1997 he co-founded Opsys Limited, an Oxford University spinout pioneering OLED display technology, which later merged with Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and listed on Nasdaq in 2004. He has since founded and led companies across deep tech (materials science), AI/machine learning (computer vision) and digital health (cardiology). In 2010 he founded LoveThis, a social-commerce recommendations platform (since closed), and he is a long-standing Chairman of the menswear e-commerce brand SPOKE (founded 2013) and of Wattbike, the indoor training bike company.

He joined the European venture capital firm Atomico as an adviser and later Partner (roughly 2016–2020), focused on enterprise, consumer and deep tech. There he supported portfolio companies on growth strategy and scaling and evaluated new investments, working with companies including MessageBird, Teralytics, Framer and Hinge Health.

In October 2020 he was appointed CEO of Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE, formerly Oxford Sciences Innovation), the University of Oxford's affiliated investment company, joining full-time in January 2021. He rebranded the organisation and, in July 2022, led a c.£250m rights issue. He departed after about two years (start of 2023); press reports (Sky News) described him as having been "forced out." His LinkedIn now lists him under "Science Capital," continuing as a founder, investor and board member of technology businesses.

• Backs founders and operators — his own path (doctor → operator → founder → investor) means he weighs commercialisation and scaling ability heavily, not just the underlying science.
• Comfortable across the lifecycle: seed/early-stage angel bets plus growth-stage scaling experience from Atomico and OSE.
• At OSE, core investment areas were life sciences, health technology and deep technology.
