Background

Alfred Chu is a career venture investor with more than eighteen years of global venture capital experience spanning Silicon Valley and China. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BS from UC Berkeley, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. Early in his career he worked as an investment banker at Citigroup and as a financial analyst at Hewlett-Packard before moving into venture investing.

Chu spent six years in Silicon Valley as a venture partner in Panasonic's corporate venture fund, and eight years based in China making early-stage venture investments as a partner at IPV Capital and TDRH Capital. He also worked with Yimei Capital, a China-based fund of funds, where he led the firm's global direct-investment practice and its US and European expansion. This gives him an unusually cross-border profile, bridging US and Asian technology and capital markets.

Today Chu is a partner at DIR Ventures, a multifamily office focused on the alternative-data ecosystem and data-driven disruption, and Managing Partner / founder of Starlite Investment Group. He serves as an advisor and venture partner to iFly.vc, an Austin-based, thesis-driven seed-stage fund led by founding partner Han Shen that backs consumer and commerce transformation. Chu has been associated with iFly.vc since around 2019, initially as a limited partner and advisor. He also sits on public/company boards, including as an Independent Non-Executive Director at Vobile Group, and has held an advisor role with the Berkeley Frontier Fund.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the earliest stages (seed / pre-seed to Series A), the range iFly.vc concentrates on and leads.
  • Focuses on tech-enabled transformation of traditional industries — iFly's stated thesis is reshaping the "$20 trillion American consumer economy" through cultural evolution and AI, backing founders changing how people live, work, shop, eat, move, and connect.
  • Personal specialization in data-driven disruption and alternative data (through DIR Ventures) and cross-border US–China opportunities.
  • iFly's approach — which Chu supports as an advisor — emphasizes deep domain knowledge before investing, a concentrated portfolio, and hands-on value-add rather than spray-and-pray. Its tagline captures the philosophy: *"Discover Value in the Unsexy."*
  • Values operator and cross-border experience; his own background pattern-matches to founders bridging US and Asian markets or applying data/AI to unglamorous, large-value-chain industries.

Notable Investments

  • Weee! — Asian/ethnic online grocery marketplace; iFly.vc portfolio company (one of the fund's flagship consumer/commerce bets).
  • Ume Tea — bubble tea / consumer F&B brand in the iFly.vc portfolio.
  • BorderX Lab (Beyond / 别样) — cross-border e-commerce platform; iFly.vc portfolio.
  • Vidi — shopping/commerce startup in the iFly.vc portfolio.
  • ChefUs — food/commerce startup in the iFly.vc portfolio.
  • Vobile Group — content-identification and digital-asset protection company where Chu serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director (earlier associated via a 2013 Series C round).
