Background
Alfredo A. Marti is a co-founder and Partner of Sandbrook Capital, a private investment firm launched in 2021 that builds infrastructure companies supporting reliable, resilient, and lower-carbon power systems. He co-founded the firm alongside Carl Williams, Christopher Hunt, Germán Cueva, and Kenneth Ryan — a group that had been investing together in renewable energy for nearly 15 years. At Sandbrook he co-chairs the Executive Committee and sits on the Investment, Performance & Growth, Valuation, and Climate Impact & ESG committees, and holds board seats at portfolio companies including Havfram and Cloverleaf Infrastructure.
Before Sandbrook, Marti spent roughly 13 years (2008–2021) at Riverstone, a leading energy-focused private equity firm, where he rose to Partner / Managing Director and served as Co-Head of Global Power & Renewables and Co-Head of Latin America. He was responsible for sourcing and managing power and oil-and-gas investments, served on Riverstone's investment and ESG committees, and held board roles at companies such as Pattern Energy and Forsa Energy. He departed Riverstone in early 2021 amid a broader wave of senior departures reported by Bloomberg.
Prior to private equity, Marti spent over a decade in leadership positions at BP plc, where he led the organization overseeing financial and operational performance and capital allocation for BP's worldwide exploration and production businesses, served as Head of Strategy for BP's North America Gas business, and was General Manager of several US gas-producing assets.
Marti holds an M.B.A. from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar (top ~10% of his class); a summa cum laude degree in Economics from Venezuela's Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB); and a Corporate Finance diploma from London Business School. He also served as a professor of finance and entrepreneurship at UCAB.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in energy-transition and climate infrastructure — clean power generation, transmission, storage, offshore wind, energy efficiency, industrial decarbonization, and clean-powered digital infrastructure.
- Sandbrook describes itself as "building infrastructure companies that support reliable, resilient and lower-carbon power systems," typically taking control or majority positions and creating scalable platforms rather than passive minority stakes.
- Writes large, institutional equity checks ($250M–$750M+ per platform), often alongside partners like PSP Investments, IMCO, and NGP — this is growth/buyout infrastructure capital, not angel or seed funding.
- Geographic focus on North America and Europe, backed by extensive Latin America/emerging-markets experience from Riverstone.
- Emphasizes hands-on company-building and management partnership, drawing on a founding team with ~15 years of shared renewable-energy investing history and operational roots (BP, Riverstone).
Notable Investments
- Havfram (2022) — Acquired a majority stake in the Norwegian offshore-wind installation company and committed ~$250M (part of a broader ~$500M equity package with PSP Investments) to fund next-generation turbine-installation vessels.
- Cloverleaf Infrastructure (with NGP) — Backed founder David Berry's developer of low-carbon, electricity-powered digital/data-center infrastructure with 300M+ in commitments; Marti holds a board seat.
- NeXtWind (August 2023) — Sandbrook, with PSP Investments and IMCO, acquired the German renewable-energy company with $750M of committed capital.
- Voltwise Power (June 2023) — Launched a developer/owner/operator of utility-scale battery energy storage systems, initially targeting the UK and Germany.
- United Utility (December 2025) — Acquired in a ~$1 billion bet on power-grid infrastructure.
- Riverstone-era boards: Pattern Energy and Forsa Energy (during his tenure as Co-Head of Global Power & Renewables).
