Background

Ali Afridi is a Partner at Equal Ventures, a New York–based, thesis-driven seed firm that backs founders reshaping legacy industries. He studied Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and got his start in venture early — first hired by Equal Ventures founder Rick Zullo at Lightbank while Afridi was still in college. He later joined Equal Ventures at its founding, before the firm had closed a single dollar of capital, where he worked as a verticalized specialist covering the insurance sector.

In late 2021 Afridi left Equal to pursue entrepreneurship. He founded Drenchworks, a vertical SaaS platform for plumbing and mechanical contractors, and built Sandhill.io, a self-sustaining VC-insights aggregator. Sandhill.io (sandhill.io) is a newsletter and tool that aggregates and shares investment theses and insights from more than 700 investors and startup analysts — a project he continues to run alongside his investing.

Afridi rejoined Equal Ventures as a Principal on January 16, 2024 — the third time Rick Zullo had hired him — and has since been elevated to Partner. Zullo has publicly described him as bringing "authentic curiosity for questions plaguing our industries" and "a hacker's mindset," valuing his firsthand founder experience "going from zero to one." He is characterized as a generalist who now leads deals across each of Equal's core markets while supporting portfolio companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Thesis-driven, legacy-industry focus: Invests in founders "transforming legacy industries" that are often overlooked by mainstream tech investors.
  • Stage: Leads and co-leads seed rounds at Equal Ventures; also active as a personal angel investor.
  • Sectors: Concentrated in Equal's core markets — insurance & benefits, supply chain & logistics, climate & energy, and retail/commerce — with a growing emphasis on vertical AI applications within those verticals.
  • What makes him say yes: Prizes operators with a "hacker's mindset" who rigorously test concepts and build workflows/tools; his own operating experience (Drenchworks) means he values founders who can execute zero-to-one in unglamorous, vertical markets.
  • Research-led sourcing: Uses Sandhill.io to track market theses and emerging opportunities, so he tends to engage founders with a clear, well-articulated market thesis.
