Background

Ali Fancy is a Partner at Cento Ventures, a Singapore-based venture capital firm founded in 2011 that invests in fast-growing digital businesses across Southeast Asia's emerging markets. At Cento he works hands-on with the firm's portfolio companies, providing performance-execution advice, strategy development, and talent-acquisition support, and he sits on the investment committee of the firm's Cento III fund. His operating background is unusually deep for a VC investor, spanning both consulting and frontline general management.

Before joining Cento, Ali spent roughly four to four-and-a-half years as CEO/COO of ZALORA Thailand, a subsidiary of Global Fashion Group (Asia's largest fashion e-commerce group). There he led a team of about 220 people across customer service, marketing, procurement, warehouse operations, logistics, and HR, and developed the profitability strategy that culminated in ZALORA Thailand's merger with Central Group, one of Thailand's largest conglomerates. Prior to ZALORA, he was a strategy consultant for about two years at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Southeast Asia, focusing on strategic turnarounds, business due diligence, M&A, and growth strategy.

Earlier in his career, Ali co-founded and ran a manufacturing business: he was Co-Founder and General Manager for nine years at In-Season Foods Ltd, a frozen-foods manufacturer that was ultimately sold, and he also held a General Manager role associated with the Jelly Belly Candy Company. This FMCG and operating experience informs his practical, execution-oriented approach with founders.

Ali holds a joint honours degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and speaks both English and Thai.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Cento Ventures at Series A and early Series B into digital companies with proven business models, meaningful revenue, and ambitions to become category or regional leaders in Southeast Asia.
  • Typical initial check of US$1–2M, scaling to ~US$4M across the lifetime of an investment; Cento frequently leads or co-leads rounds.
  • Strong tilt toward fintech and digital financial services, which absorbed roughly 75% of Cento's capital deployment as of H2 2024, alongside payments, marketplaces/"last-mile" e-commerce, digital advertising, and travel.
  • Backs businesses in emerging digital markets across Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam — a region Cento publishes on annually via its "Southeast Asia Tech Investment" reports.
  • Ali's personal value-add is operational: as a former e-commerce CEO/COO and BCG consultant, he emphasizes execution, path-to-profitability, and talent — signaling a preference for founders who can show a credible route to sustainable unit economics rather than growth at any cost.
