Background

Alipt Sharma is a Partner at South Asia Advisors, the India-based sub-advisor to GEF Capital Partners, where he is responsible for sourcing, structuring, and managing investments across South Asia. He joined the platform upon the inception of GEF Capital Partners in 2018, having originally joined its predecessor, the Global Environment Fund (GEF), in 2010 as a Managing Director. Across that tenure he has overseen portfolio companies including Integrated Cleanroom Technologies, Rishabh Instruments, Concord Enviro Systems, and Kalkitech. In October 2024/2025 GEF publicly celebrated his elevation to Partner.

Before GEF, Sharma was a member of the investment team at AMP Capital Investors in India, where he identified, analyzed, and managed Indian infrastructure opportunities. Prior to that he served as an Associate Vice President with Ambit Corporate Finance, a leading Indian investment bank, focusing on acquisitions and private equity transactions. Earlier in his career he spent roughly seven years at Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young, leading consulting teams in the power and telecommunications sectors.

Sharma holds a B.A. in Economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and an MBA from the Indian School of Business, and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He is based in Mumbai and works in English and Hindi.

GEF Capital Partners manages the South Asia Growth Fund II (~$193M, 2018) and South Asia Growth Fund III (~$440M, 2023–24), backed by development finance institutions such as British International Investment (BII), IFC, Proparco, and the EIB. The firm invests in middle-market companies enabling climate mitigation, adaptation, circular economy, and resource efficiency — the mandate that defines Sharma's deal activity.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Climate-first growth equity in India: Invests in profitable, middle-market businesses whose products or services enable climate mitigation, adaptation, circular economy, and resource efficiency.
  • Core sectors: Clean energy value chain, energy efficiency, climate tech, agribusiness/food security, water security, resource & waste recovery, mobility, smart cities/green buildings, and low-carbon transition.
  • Geography: Primarily India, with limited opportunistic Southeast Asia exposure (Fund III targets ~90% India / ~10% SE Asia).
  • ESG/impact discipline: GEF is a GIIN member and IFC/BII/EIB/Proparco-backed with a formal Impact Principles disclosure — impact measurement and ESG commitments are integral to underwriting.
  • What makes him say yes (in his own words, on the Kimbal deal): he cited "engineering depth, the breadth of its product roadmap … and the role its platform plays in supporting decarbonization in live deployments across Indian utilities" — signaling a preference for technically deep, deployment-proven businesses with real decarbonization impact.

Notable Investments

  • Kimbal Technologies — India-based smart-grid/energy-engineering (AMI) company; GEF led its $22M Series B (announced April 2026) to scale smart-grid solutions globally.
  • Concord Enviro Systems — water/wastewater treatment and resource-recovery company; GEF took a partial exit via its IPO (listed Dec 27, 2024, ~18% listing premium).
  • Rishabh Instruments — electrical measurement/precision-engineered products maker; IPO'd Aug–Sep 2023.
  • Integrated Cleanroom Technologies — cleanroom infrastructure/engineering portfolio company.
  • Kalkitech — smart-grid/energy communications technology company.
  • Arya.ag — technology-led agri warehousing/finance platform in GEF's South Asia climate-agri portfolio (associated with GEF's IFC agri-value-chain co-investment activity, 2025–26).
