Alison Lawton

Alison Lawton (born May 29, 1970, in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian business investor, social-venture catalyst, and philanthropist. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Concordia University (1995) and later a Master of Arts in Applied Sciences from Simon Fraser University (2006), where her thesis examined the role of media in creating value in financial markets. She began her business career at Investor First Financial in Vancouver, specializing in private equity sales.

In 1997 Lawton founded Winfield Venture Group Ltd., a private-equity and corporate-finance boutique, which today operates as Mindset Venture Group Ltd. In 1998 she was a co-founding partner of IdeaPark Ventures, Inc., a Vancouver dot-com incubator listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange; mining financier Ian Telfer bought it in February 2000 (renaming it Itemus Inc.) for roughly $2.5 million in stock and cash, though the successor company went bankrupt in 2001. Through Mindset Venture Group she continues to back early-stage companies with rapid growth potential, and she runs the firm's associated CGP Fund out of Vancouver.

Beyond investing, Lawton is a prominent impact-investing pioneer and philanthropist. She was an early investor in the Acumen Fund, helped launch Canada's first social-impact investment fund (the MaRS Catalyst Fund, now Amplify Capital) alongside Richard Branson's Virgin Unite and the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, and was a founding investor in the Activate health social-impact bond with the Heart & Stroke Foundation. She founded the Mindset Social Innovation Foundation (originally Mindset Media Society, 2006), produced documentaries including *Uganda Rising* (narrated by Kevin Spacey) and *Hope in the Time of AIDS* (narrated by Pierce Brosnan), chaired UNICEF's "Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS" campaign in Canada, and endowed UBC's International Reporting Program with a $1 million donation in 2009. She has received UNICEF's Champion for Children Award, SFU's Outstanding Alumni Award, a BIV Top 40 Under 40, an appointment to Harvard Kennedy School's Women's Leadership Board, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from Capilano University (2025).
