Background
Alois Schärli (born 1962) is a career Swiss banking executive rather than a professional venture or angel investor. He completed a commercial apprenticeship, studied at the HWV business school in Lucerne, and qualified as a Swiss certified public accountant/auditor ("diplomierter Wirtschaftsprüfer") as well as a trained banking controller. He began his career at Luzerner Kantonalbank and then spent years in auditing, rising to become an audit manager for banks and financial companies at Ernst & Young AG.
He joined Berner Kantonalbank (BEKB/BCBE) in 2003 as Head of Financial Management, and became a member of the Executive Board (Geschäftsleitung) in 2010. He served as the bank's Chief Financial Officer and, in his later years, as Deputy CEO, leading the Finance/Risk Management department. He stepped down from the BEKB Executive Board at the end of April 2024 due to retirement.
Alongside his BEKB executive role, Schärli held and holds several board mandates: member of the board of Swiss Immo Lab AG and of the Pfandbriefzentrale der schweizerischen Kantonalbanken AG (the central mortgage-bond institution of the Swiss cantonal banks), president of a foundation supporting SMEs through industry clusters, and president of the BEKB pension fund (from January 2024). From the founding of BEKB's digital-platform subsidiary aity AG in 2022, he served as its Chairman of the Board (Verwaltungsratspräsident) until spring 2025, when BEKB CEO Armin Brun succeeded him.
After leaving BEKB, Schärli was elected to the board of directors of Migros Bank, where he was named to lead the audit and risk committee — continuing his focus on financial governance, audit, and risk.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- No public record of a personal angel-investing thesis, portfolio, or seed-round activity was found. The stub's classification as an "Angel Investor" targeting "Seed Round" deals could not be verified from primary or secondary sources.
- His professional expertise centers on bank finance, accounting/audit, and risk management — the natural lens through which he would evaluate any company.
- Where he has been closest to "new ventures," it has been in an institutional/governance capacity (chairing BEKB's digital subsidiary aity AG, board roles at Swiss Immo Lab and Migros Bank) rather than as a personal check-writer.
- If treated as a prospective angel, his likely areas of comfort would be Swiss financial services and fintech, given his career and the digital-banking mandate he chaired at aity.
Notable Investments
- No verified personal angel or seed-stage investments were found. The following are his relevant corporate/board roles rather than personal deals:
- aity AG — BEKB's digital financial-services subsidiary (founded 2022); Schärli was founding Chairman of the Board until spring 2025.
- Swiss Immo Lab AG — board member (real-estate/property venture linked to the cantonal-bank ecosystem).
- Migros Bank AG — board of directors member and head of the audit & risk committee (from 2024).
- Pfandbriefzentrale der schweizerischen Kantonalbanken AG — board member (central mortgage-bond institution of Swiss cantonal banks).
