Background
Amit Thaper is a healthcare-focused private equity investor with an unusual clinical pedigree. He trained as a medical doctor, earning a BMBS and BMedSci (1st Class Honours) from Nottingham Medical School, and spent roughly three years practising in the UK's National Health Service as an orthopaedic surgeon before moving into business. He then completed an MBA at Harvard Business School (2010–2012).
Thaper spent about five years as a strategy consultant with Bain & Company in the UK and the USA, advising clients across manufacturing, distribution and other industries and running commercial due-diligence studies for leading private equity firms. He subsequently worked as an investment executive/Vice President at H.I.G. Capital in Boston, focusing on North American middle-market companies.
In April 2017 he joined Cairngorm Capital, a London-based private investment firm, as Investment Director, and was later promoted to Managing Director and a seat on the firm's Investment Committee. At Cairngorm he led the firm's push into healthcare and assisted living, spearheading its entry into the sector with the acquisition of Millbrook Healthcare and leading investments in EMED Group and SageHome. He spent roughly eight years at Cairngorm.
In July 2025, Thaper joined LDC — the private equity arm of Lloyds Banking Group — as Investment Director based in London, where he is tasked with sourcing new investment opportunities (with an emphasis on healthcare) and supporting the growth of LDC's healthcare portfolio companies. His hire came alongside that of Adam Philippsohn and followed a year in which LDC invested around £100m in the healthcare sector.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Sector specialist in healthcare: Combines frontline clinical experience (NHS orthopaedic surgeon) with ~15 years of PE and consulting, giving him deep credibility with healthcare management teams and clinicians.
- Mid-market, not early-stage: Invests in established, revenue-generating businesses via buyouts and growth capital — despite aggregator tags suggesting "seed/angel," his actual activity is institutional mid-market PE.
- Buy-and-build orientation: At Cairngorm he backed platform businesses (e.g., SageHome, Millbrook Healthcare) and drove growth through bolt-on acquisitions.
- Sub-sectors of interest: Health & social care services, assisted living / "aging-in-place," medical equipment and mobility, pharma and medtech.
- In his own words (on joining LDC): *"It's brilliant to be joining LDC at a time when the firm is focused on growing its presence in the London market, and building on its experience in the healthcare space – a sector I care deeply about both personally and professionally. With its long-term partnership-based approach, LDC is uniquely placed to support the next generation of healthcare businesses delivering critical services."*
Notable Investments
- Millbrook Healthcare — UK assisted-living / mobility and community equipment services provider; Cairngorm's first investment in the assisted living sector, enabled by Thaper's 2017 appointment. Cairngorm later sold its specialist wheelchair division, Ross Care, to Medequip.
- EMED Group — UK non-emergency patient transport and healthcare logistics business; Cairngorm exited to Tiger Infrastructure Partners (deal led by Thaper and George Buckle), completing October 2025.
- SageHome (SageHome Inc.) — North American "aging-in-place" home-modification platform; Cairngorm has backed a rapid buy-and-build, including acquisitions of Safe Showers, Colorado Living, Midwest Bath, New Bath Today and CareFree Home Pros.
