Background

Andreas Arndt (born c. 1959 — reported as 55 in September 2014 and 65 in October 2023) is a veteran German banker who spent the bulk of his early career at Deutsche Bank from the mid-1980s onward. Public executive databases place him in a succession of roles there, including deputy branch manager, corporate-customer and trade-finance postings in Asia (Bangkok in the mid-1990s and a regional mid-cap corporates role for Asia Pacific out of Singapore, 1997–1999), and senior corporate and real estate positions in Germany, including a management-board seat at what became DB's private and corporate clients bank through the 2000s.

From 2010 to 2014 he served as Chief Financial Officer of the Austrian bank BAWAG P.S.K. before moving to Hypo Real Estate Group / Deutsche Pfandbriefbank. At pbb he was appointed co-Chief Executive Officer alongside Thomas Köntgen effective 1 October 2014, while retaining the CFO role and helping steer the bank through its 2015 privatisation and IPO (pbb was spun out of the state-rescued Hypo Real Estate and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, later joining the MDAX). He became sole Chairman of the Management Board (CEO) from 2016, unusually continuing to hold the CFO mandate as well.

Arndt led pbb — a specialist lender in commercial real estate finance and public investment finance across Germany, Europe and the US — for roughly eight years as CEO and ten years on the board in total. He resigned as planned in late 2023 and was succeeded as Chairman of the Management Board by Kay Wolf (a former Deutsche Bank director), who took up the role on 1 February 2024. During Arndt's final year, pbb was publicly contending with hedge-fund pressure over capital distribution and heightened scrutiny of commercial-real-estate lenders.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Arndt's professional "investment" activity is as a bank lender/underwriter, not as a venture or angel investor. At pbb his mandate centred on commercial real estate finance (office, retail, logistics, residential portfolios) and public investment finance for infrastructure and public-sector projects.
  • pbb's lending is concentrated in Germany, other European markets, and the United States, typically funded through Pfandbriefe (covered bonds) — a conservative, security-backed lending model rather than equity risk-taking.
  • No stated seed/angel thesis, check size, or startup target-company profile was found. The stub fields "Angel Investors," "Seed Round," and any implied check size should be treated as unverified/likely erroneous and are therefore not filled in with fabricated figures.

Notable Investments

  • No personal angel or venture portfolio could be identified for Andreas Arndt in public sources (Crunchbase's profile lists him only as pbb's CEO/CFO, not as an investor with deals).
  • His institutional footprint is at Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG, where he oversaw a multi-billion-euro book of commercial real estate and public-sector loans and led the bank through its 2015 IPO / privatisation out of Hypo Real Estate.
