Background
Andreas Denkmann is a long-standing Partner at capiton AG, an owner-managed private equity firm based in Berlin that manages roughly EUR 1.1 billion and has completed 70+ investments across 80+ companies over its history. He joined capiton in 2008 and has been part of the firm's partner group focused on management buyouts, succession situations and growth financings in the German-speaking mid-market.
Before capiton, Denkmann held senior operating roles at a publicly listed renewable-energy company, first as Head of M&A/Corporate Development and subsequently as Chief Commercial Officer. Earlier in his career he spent six years in various leadership positions at 3i, the international private equity house, working on both new investments and portfolio management, and prior to that spent four years at an international strategy consulting firm. He studied in Germany and the USA and holds an MBA.
Note that capiton's current published team page lists nine managing partners and does not include Denkmann; secondary databases (MarketScreener, RocketReach) describe him more recently as an independent private-equity senior advisor and non-executive director / advisory-board (Beirat) member ("Denkmann PE"), suggesting he has shifted from an active deal-partner role toward advisory and board work. His capiton email address, however, remains in use.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in profitable, established mid-market companies, not seed or angel-stage startups — buyouts, succession deals and expansion capital
- Equity checks of EUR 20–60 million from capiton's own funds, scaling up with co-investors
- Sector emphasis on life sciences, high-tech industrials, healthcare, digital, consumer goods and business services
- Focus on companies with strong, committed management teams and defensible technology/market positions; capiton highlights that its holdings grow EBITDA ~18% per year on average
- On the Kautex deal, Denkmann cited being impressed by the company's technological competence (extrusion blow-moulding machines), the management's expertise and commitment, and growth prospects in new market segments — a good window into what makes him say yes
Notable Investments
- Kautex Maschinenbau — leading manufacturer of extrusion blow-moulding machines for hollow plastic parts; capiton acquired ~49.9% (from prior investor Steadfast) in early 2013, with Denkmann as the responsible partner, and exited successfully in 2018
- capiton's broader portfolio during and after his tenure has included companies such as AEMtec (microelectronics), CEDES (sensor technology), KD Pharma (omega-3 / life sciences), Axxence (natural flavours & fragrances), Raith (nanofabrication equipment) and Asyril (robotics feeding systems) — illustrating the high-tech industrials / life-sciences / healthcare focus he invests within
