Background
Dr. Andreas Wicki is a Swiss healthcare entrepreneur and investor who has served as CEO of HBM Healthcare Investments Ltd (formerly HBM BioVentures) and its advisory arm HBM Partners Ltd since 2001. He studied chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Bern, completing his degree in 1983, and earned his doctorate at the university's Theodor Kocher Institute in 1986. Early in his scientific career he received an award for research in thrombosis and haemostasis at the XI International Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis in Brussels in 1987.
Before moving into investing, Wicki built and ran life-sciences businesses. From roughly 1990 to 1998 he was co-owner and CEO of ANAWA Laboratorien AG and Clinserve AG, two Swiss contract-research organisations focused on analytical services, which he sold to Canada's MDS Inc. He then served as Senior Vice President of European Analytical Operations at MDS (1998–2001), a role that drew him into analysing, selecting and financing biotech and medtech companies. Across 1988–2001 he was chief executive of several pharmaceutical companies and worked as an investment and venture-capital advisor from 1993 to 2001.
Since taking the helm at HBM, Wicki has overseen a global portfolio spanning private companies, listed healthcare stocks, and funds, with a strong track record of taking private holdings to IPO or trade sale. He also holds several board seats connected to the firm and its portfolio, including HBM Healthcare Investments (Cayman) Ltd (since 2001), Buchler GmbH / FAGUS Group (since 2000), and Harmony Biosciences (since 2017).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests across the healthcare value chain — human medicine, biotech, medtech and diagnostics — worldwide, with emphasis on Europe, North America and Asia.
- Core strategy targets later-stage private companies: "The initial investment is typically made in the later stages of clinical development," favouring firms that are "attractively valued and have a convincing business model, including their product pipeline, technology and management."
- Prefers companies at or near profitability / cash-flow neutrality that need expansion capital, and will take majority stakes, add in follow-on rounds, and increase holdings around IPOs.
- Structures investments predominantly as equity, with convertible bonds and derivatives permitted; enforces diversification via the ~10%-of-net-assets cap per position.
- Also holds public equities and third-party funds, using the listed book for liquidity while private positions drive outsized returns through exits.
Notable Investments
- Yellow Jersey Therapeutics — a spin-off of Swiss biotech Numab; its Phase 2-ready bispecific antibody NM26 (atopic dermatitis) was acquired by Johnson & Johnson for USD 1.25 billion (2025), contributing ~CHF 59 million profit to HBM; HBM retains ~7% of Numab.
- Upstream Bio — respiratory/inflammation biotech; IPO'd on NASDAQ (~$873M market cap, 2024); positive study data drove portfolio gains, though shares were volatile post-IPO.
- Sai Life Sciences — Indian CRO/CDMO; listed on India's NSE/BSE in December 2024 (~$1.34B market cap).
- Harmony Biosciences — U.S. commercial-stage CNS/rare-disease company (pitolisant/Wakix); Wicki has served on its board since 2017.
- Numab Therapeutics — Swiss multispecific-antibody platform company and parent of the Yellow Jersey spin-out; HBM remains a shareholder.
- HBM reports that ~38 of its portfolio companies have gone public over the firm's history, underscoring an IPO-heavy exit record.
