Background

Andy Johns is one of Silicon Valley's best-known growth operators turned investor. He built his reputation running growth at a string of category-defining consumer companies: he worked on growth and user engagement at Facebook (as it scaled from roughly 100M to 500M+ users), Twitter (~40M to ~140M active users), and Quora (helping stand up its first growth team and reach its first ~10,000 users). He later joined Wealthfront, rising from Director/VP of Growth & Product to President of the company. He has been described as having been involved — as employee, advisor, or investor — with eight companies that reached $1B+ valuations, and he served as an advisor-in-residence at Greylock Partners.

In February 2019 he joined Unusual Ventures — the early-stage firm co-founded by Jyoti Bansal (AppDynamics) and John Vrionis (ex-Lightspeed) — as a General/Venture Partner to build out its consumer-focused portfolio. There he invested out of a ~$160M fund concentrated on Seed and Series A, with parallel theses in consumer and enterprise infrastructure, and a model built around hands-on "company builder" support for founders rather than capital alone.

Beginning around 2021–2022, Johns stepped away from venture and executive roles to focus on his mental health and recovery from childhood trauma, a transition he has written about publicly (including a widely shared essay republished by Hunter Walk). He now spends his time advising startups on growth and as a mental-health advocate. He writes "Clues" (Clues Dot Life), a fast-growing newsletter on healing, trauma, and personal transformation, serves as a board member of the Heroic Hearts Project, and works with military veterans suffering from PTSD and with burned-out high achievers.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Seed and Series A — Unusual was built explicitly as an early-stage firm focused on these rounds.
  • Check size & ownership: Roughly $1M–$6M lead checks at Unusual targeting 10–20% ownership; smaller personal angel checks (~$100K).
  • Growth quality over vanity metrics: He looks for organic growth and engagement rather than acquisition-driven, paid user growth — a direct extension of his operating career.
  • Business models he likes: Network effects, subscription services, and proprietary-content platforms; consumer social and "network-driven" startups in particular.
  • People first: He has said he prioritizes backing "amazing people" with compelling visions over trying to predict markets — betting on founder quality.
  • Traction signal: Reaching roughly $1M+ in annualized recurring revenue is a milestone that gets his attention.
